Russia 1992-1995: Lada 2104-7 & Samara should dominate
The collapse of the USSR in 1991 means car sales for the country are filed under Russia from 1992 onwards. The Russian market understandably freefalls 31.4% in 1992 to 669.060 units but impressively bounces back in 1993 at +52.5% to 1.020.468, the first time since 1985 sales in the region cross the symbolic 1 million annual unit-mark. But it’s bad news afterwards: 1994 sales take a 22.4% dive to 791.298 with 1995 almost identical at 791.310.
A second very popular Lada model appeared on the Soviet Union’s roads in 1984: the Lada Sputnik, better known worldwide as Samara. The 3-door hatchback was launched in 1984, followed by the 5-door hatchback in 1987 and the sedan in 1990. In all likeliness, the Samara should feature along the Lada 2104/5/7 on top of the car sales ranking of the USSR from 1989 to 1991, and Russia from 1992 to 1995. I couldn’t find any official figures for this period so if you have any please do get in touch! More info on the Lada Samara here.
