Germany 1994: VW Golf leads, Mercedes C Class shines

In 1994 the German new car market is stable at 3,209,224 registrations. The VW Golf improves its score further to reach a fantastic 388,707 sales, the nameplate’s second best year ever, and 12% market share. The Opel Astra hurts, down 9% to 228,186 units and 7.1% share.

Mercedes C Class

Launched last year, the Mercedes C Class is an instant hit in Germany, landing on the podium for its first full year of sales at #3 with 142,744 units and 4.4% share. The BMW 3 Series and VW Passat are also very strong, respectively #4 at +8% and #5 at 19%.  The new generation Opel Corsa is up 4 spots and 38% to #6. Notice also the Ford Mondeo up to #11 for its first full year of sales.

The Renault 19 is the best-selling foreign model for the 5th consecutive year but drops to #16 and 52,461 sales (-29%), now threatened by the Fiat Punto up to #17 for its first fill year. The Peugeot 306 (#18), Renault Clio (#20), Mazda 323 (#21) and Renault Twingo (#22) follow.
