The Australian new car market continues to improve in 1993, up 2% year-on-year to 555,306 registrations, but still far from its 1990 level. Having reclaimed the top spot in 1992 for just 191 units, the Ford Falcon has a slightly less stressful run this year, up 12% to 62,663 sales and a mammoth 11.7% market share. In the meantime the Holden Commodore is up only 9% to reach 62,663 units and 11.3%. The Mitsubishi Magna/Verada is up again at +11% to 37,671 sales and a stunning 6.8% market share.

Mitsubishi Magna

1993 is the year of the large car: the Toyota Camry/Vienta is up a massive 27% to 32,551 units, making the Top 4 best-sellers 100% large cars like in 1992 but now adding up to a huge 35.7% market share vs. 32.3% last year. The Toyota Corolla is stable at #5, the Toyota Hilux is up 19% and 2 spots to #6 and the Ford Laser is down one and 14% to #7.

Toyota Camry

Notice the excellent performance of the Hyundai Excel, up 7 ranks and 38% to break into the Australian year-end Top 10 for the first time at #10 with 11,582 sales and 2.1%. Further down, the Ford Festiva is up 12 spots and 61% to #17, the Ford Telstar is up 13 and 46% to a brilliant 20th place just below its twin the Mazda 626 at #18 and the popular badge-engineered model, the Toyota Lexcen (aka Holden Commodore) is up 7 and 16% to #21. Among the new entrants in the Top 50 this year, the Hyundai Lantra is up to #39 and the Land Rover Discovery is #41.
