Spain 1987: Seat Ibiza in pole position for the first time
The Seat Ibiza tops its home sales charts for the first time in 1987.

New car sales in Spain continue to gallop ahead with a 33.1% year-on-year surge in 1987 to a record 887.777 registrations. Renault (+15.3%) remains the most popular brand but keeps diving market share-wise at 22.3% vs. 25.8% a year ago. Ford (+43.1%), Opel (+30.3%), Seat (+27.8%) and Peugeot (+50.7%) ensure the Top 5 is unchanged on 1986. Fiat (+133.4%), Audi (+104.1%), Lancia (+98.9%) and Alfa Romeo (+90.5%) all post spectacular gains.
Model-wise, the top of the ranking is completely reshuffled and it’s a photo finish with the Top 5 models all fitting within one percentage point of market share. 3 years after its launch in 1984, the Seat Ibiza (+94.2%) almost doubles its sales year-on-year and leaps up 5 spots to grab the #1 spot for the first time in Spain. It distances the Opel Kadett (+80.7%), Renault 21 (+163.4%) up to #3 for its first full year in market, the Renault 11 (-19.1%) #1 for the past 3 years, the Peugeot 205 (+5.8%) and Renault Supercinq (+22.7%). The Ford Orion (+56.9%) and Fiesta (+56.1%) make themselves noticed in the tail end of the Top 10, the Peugeot 309 (+909.7%) is up to #11 for its first full year of sales, the Citroen AX lands directly at #14 and the Seat Marbella at #15.
