Only Northern Ireland manages to keep its head above the water this month with a minuscule 0.1% year-on-year gain to 3.134 sales, whereas England (-10.2% to 142.900), Wales (-10.4% to 5.522) and most strikingly Scotland (-24.2% to 11.585) all fall heavily. Year-to-date, England is the best performing UK nation with a 4.6% decline to 2.057.968 units, followed by Northern Ireland down 4.9% to 52.556, Scotland down 7.1% to 193.371 and Wales down 10.3% to 78.148.

Eighth nationally, the Kia Sportage appears in the Top 10 of 3 nations: England (#9), Northern Ireland (#5) and Scotland (#10) where it is its first appearance at that level. Although #1 in Scotland YTD, the Vauxhall Corsa is outside the Top 10 there for the second month running. Notable performances include the Skoda Fabia breaking into the Northern Irish YTD Top 10, the Vauxhall Insignia up to #6 in Scotland and the Hyundai i20 posting its first Scottish Top 10 ranking at #7. Thanks to our partnership with SMMT we can share with you the Top 10 best-sellers for each UK nation in October. Keep in mind this is only a zoom in by nation, all sales figures will be included in the upcoming October UK update. England sets the tone this month with a 12.2% decline to 136.578 leading to a 4.2% year-to-date drop to 1.915.068. Two nations fare better than the average: Northern Ireland down 2.2% to 3.516 leading to a 5.2% YTD drop to 49.422 and Wales down 10.3% to 5.394, the same rate as YTD to 72.626. Scotland underperforms with a 14.7% skid to 12.306 units, a lot more than the -5.8% YTD to 181.786.

The Ford Fiesta is #1 in England, Scotland and Wales while the VW Golf reclaims the Northern Irish lead it holds YTD.  In England and comparing with the UK Top 10, the Audi A3 overtakes the Kia Sportage to #6 and the Nissan Juke is inside the Top 10 instead of the Ford Kuga, which owes its UK Top 10 ranking to a 9th place in Northern Ireland and 3rd place in Wales. YTD in England, the Mercedes C-Class is now up to #5 vs. #8 in the UK overall. Other great performers this month include the Citroen C3 up to #3 in Northern Ireland, the Toyota Aygo up to #3 in Scotland, the Fiat 500 up to #5 in Scotland, the Vauxhall Mokka up to #8 in Northern Ireland and at #6 again in Wales, the Audi A1 up to #8 in Wales and the Vauxhall Insignia up to #10 in Scotland. Thanks to our partnership with SMMT we can share with you the Top 10 best-sellers for each UK nation in September. Keep in mind this is only a zoom in by nation, all sales figures are already included in the September UK update. For once England isn’t the best performing nation this month with a harsh 9.1% year-on-year drop to 364.952 units, while Northern Ireland limits its fall to -5% to 6.326 sales and Scotland is at -8% to 39.960. Meanwhile Wales drops by an abysmal 17.5% to 14.382 registrations. Year-to-date, England is down 3.5% to 1.778.488, Scotland down 5% to 169.482, Northern Ireland down 5.4% to 45.906 and Wales down 10.3% to 67.232.

The lightning strike in the UK this month is the very first pole position of the Nissan Qashqai, but as we detailed in the UK article, this tremendous performance only finds its source in England where it ranks an easy #1 with 12.447 units. For once the English Top 10 is significantly different from the UK one, with the Mini up from #7 to #5, the Mercedes A-Class up from #9 to #6, the Nissan Juke up from #8 to #7, the Mercedes C-Class up from #10 to #8, the Vauxhall Corsa down from #5 to #10 and the VW Polo down from #6 to #9. The Ford Fiesta reclaims the #1 spot in Northern Ireland and Wales, the Skoda Fabia is up to #8 in Northern Ireland where the Citroen C3 lodges its 2nd consecutive month in the Top 10. In Scotland, the Vauxhall Corsa reclaims the pole position it holds YTD but the Vauxhall Mokka X, #1 in August, is hanging in there at #2 and now #8 YTD. Very strong Renault showing in Scotland this month with the Clio up to #3 and #5 YTD, the Captur up to #5 and #10 YTD and the Dacia Sandero up to #8. Finally, notice also in Wales the Ford Kuga up to #2 and the Toyota Yaris up to #5 and now #10 YTD.

Thanks to our partnership with SMMT we can share with you the Top 10 best-sellers for each UK nation in August. Keep in mind this is only a zoom in by nation, all sales figures are already included in the August UK update. England is the best-performing nation this month with a 5.8% year-on-year drop to 64.399 units, while Northern Ireland, down 9.3% to 3.647, Scotland down 10% to 5.827 and Wales down 10% to 2.242 all struggle. Year-to-date, England is down just 1.9% to 1.413.536, Scotland down 4.1% to 129.522, Northern Ireland down 5.5% to 39.580 and Wales is the hardest hit at -8.1% to 52.850.

The Citroen C3 ranks 4th in Northern Ireland.

Low volumes in August allow for some ranking reshuffles and the Vauxhall Mokka is the big winner this month, managing an astounding top spot in both Scotland and Wales while ranking #3 in England and #6 in Northern Ireland. The Ford Fiesta (England) and VW Golf (Northern Ireland) win the remaining nations. The two additional crossovers featuring in the August UK Top 10 are also very consistent performers: the Ford Kuga is #2 in Wales, #3 in Northern Ireland, #6 in England and #10 in Scotland while the Kia Sportage is #5 in Scotland, #6 in Wales, #7 in Northern Ireland and #10 in England. Other great performers in August include the Fiat 500 up to #2 in Scotland, the Citroen C3 up to #4 in Northern Ireland, the BMW X3 up to #7 in Scotland and the Ford Ka+ up to #9 in Wales.

Thanks to our partnership with SMMT we can now share with you the Top 10 best-sellers for each UK nation in July. Keep in mind this is only a zoom in by nation, all sales figures are already included in the UK update. Accounting for 88% of the total UK market, England (-9%) evolves very much like the UK overall, while Northern Ireland performs significantly better while staying in negative at -2.3%. Wales (-12.5%) and Scotland (-13.7%) implode. The models ranking reshuffle we witness in the UK charts is applied across the board: the Ford Fiesta does not win any nation, which are shared between the VW Golf (England and Northern Ireland) and the Ford Focus (Scotland and Wales). This shift is particularly marked in Wales where the Ford Fiesta traditionally is head-and-shoulders above the competition but freefalls 72% there this month.

In England indeed, by far the largest nation in terms of sales, the VW Golf manages to outsell the Ford Focus for the top spot, with the only other change compared to the UK ranking is the Mercedes A-Class above the Vauxhall Corsa at #8. The Kia Sportage justifies its record 6th place in the UK overall by a presence in the Top 10 of each and every nation: it ranks 6th in England, Northern Ireland and Wales and 4th in Scotland. The Ford Kuga is also strong: only missing the England Top 10 but ranking #2 in Wales and #5 in Northern Ireland. Other one-off performances include the Skoda Fabia #3 in Northern Ireland, the Seat Leon #4 in the same nation and the Audi A1 cracking the Scottish Top 10 for the first time since BSCB started following the UK nation separately in 2013.
