New car sales in El Salvador are stable in 2014 at an estimated 11.900 registrations vs. 11.846 in 2013 which was a 12% year-on-year increase. The high of 2007 (17.000 units) is still a long way off. A very interesting trend in El Salvador is the booming of motorbike sales over the past 5 years (since the global recession), now clearly outselling cars – see evolution on the graph below.

I have bundled 2013 official data (the first of its kind on BSCB) with 2014 as the structure of the Salvadorian car market has been extremely stable over the past decade, so what is valid for 2013 is more than likely the same for 2014. Toyota is the best-selling carmaker in the country, followed by Kia and Hyundai, with the Toyota Hilux and Nissan Frontier topping the models ranking in a Top 5 composed at 100% of pickup trucks. El Salvador: Hilux should lead a pack of pick-ups

Videos of the streets of San Salvador, the capital city of El Salvador, reveal that in all likeliness the Toyota Hilux is the best selling car in the country. Salvadoreans are very fond of pick-ups: the Mazda BT-50, Mitsubishi L200 and Nissan Frontier are also very popular.

Other successful models in El Salvador include the Toyota Yaris, Nissan Sentra, Hyundai Santa Fe, Honda CR-V, Hyundai Getz, Kia Picanto and Toyota Corolla.
