Belgium Full Year 2025: BMW X1 and Dacia Sandero top struggling market (-7.5%)

Difficult year for the Belgian new car market in 2025 at -7.5% year-on-year to 414,771 units. However, an encouraging sign is private sales up 1.8% to 41.7% share vs. 38.1% in 2024. Meanwhile fleet sales sink -13% to 58.3% share vs. 61.9% last year. Petrol holds 40.6% of the market at 168,449 units (-1.2%), while BEVs are up to 34.7% or 143,849 units. However only 15,483 of these were purchased by private buyers (-2%). HEVs hold 11.5% share vs. 9.2% in 2024, PHEV are at 9.3% vs. 14.9% and diesel is at 3.1% vs. 4.9%.
In the brands charts, BMW (-11.3%) is the overall best-seller for the 5th year in a row and despite a significant loss. #2 Volkswagen (-8.4%) also trails the market at #2. Mercedes (-3.5%) overtakes Audi (-14%) to snap the third rank while Dacia (+4.9%) stays at #5. Peugeot (+9%) and Renault (+7.4%) defy the negative market and both climb two spots on last year to #6 and #7 respectively. Great scores also by BYD (+74.6%), MG (+40.6%), Mini (+30%) and Hyundai (+18.1%). Telsa is off -53.1% to #15.
Model-wise, the BMW X1 (-23.8%) celebrates three straight years at #1 but sinks year-on-year. The iX1 BEV variant accounts for 61% of the model’s volume this year. The Dacia Sandero (-17%) takes advantage of the Tesla Model Y’s freefall (-53.5% to #9) to step up to #2. The Citroen C3 (+3.8%) is up two spots to #3 while the Mini Cooper (+30%) is up 12 to #4. Notice also the Peugeot 2008 soaring to #8 whereas it was outside the 2024 Top 20. Other new entrants include the Audi Q6 (#10), Mercedes EQB (#14) and BMW 5 Series (#19). The BMW X1 tops the Flanders charts, the Dacia Sandero is #1 in Wallonia and the Citroen C3 #1 in Brussels. Private buyers crown the Dacia Sandero and Duster (the Bigster is #1) while fleet buyers go for the BMW X1 and Audi Q6.
