Malaysia September 2025: Proton Saga up to #2

The Proton Saga is boosted by promotions on the outgoing model.

The Malaysian new car market edges up 1.3% year-on-year in September to 61,898 units. The year-to-date volume stands at 609,276. Perodua (-1.3%) dips YoY to 37.8% share vs. 41.9% year-to-date. In contrast Proton (+16%) is in great shape at 20.3% of the market vs. 18.1% so far this year. Toyota (+5.3%) advances to 16.5% share whereas Honda (-27.4%) freefalls to #4. Chery (+43.2%) and most strikingly BYD (+184.8%) score stellar gains to rank #5 and #7 respectively. Below, Jetour (+15900%), Haval (+1650%) and Xpeng (+621.1%) manage surreal upticks. We welcome iCar at #36.

Over in the models charts, the Perodua Bezza (+4.9%) remains the best-seller with 10.9% share, this is however below the 11.9% it holds year-to-date. The hero of the month is the Proton Saga (+18.6%) up two spots on last month to land in 2nd place, its highest ranking in at least 14 months. This is likely due to promotion on the outgoing model before the facelift arrives in dealerships. The Perodua Axia (-12.1%), #1 a year ago, falls to #3 but stays #2 year-to-date. The Perodua Myvi (-1%) and a surging Perodua Alza (+20.5%) round out the Top 5. The Proton X50 (+81.8%) and Toyota Hilux (+38%) deliver the biggest gains in the Top 10 and rank #6 and #8 respectively. Notice also the new Proton e.MAS 7 at #18.
