China retail October 2025: BYD down -38.1%, Geely up 25.4%, Xiaomi and Fang Cheng Bao break records

Today we can share with you All brands and All models retail sales data for China for October. The market is actually down -9.6% year-on-year to 2,075,657 units for the selection of vehicles included in this report. This leads to a YTD tally up 6.8% to 18,558,340. BSCB is the only non-Chinese medium to cover both wholesales (ex-factory shipments) and retail sales data for China so you can get the most complete picture of the largest new car market in the world. Retail sales tend to give a more authentic picture of the market as they roughly correspond to registrations by end-customers and are more difficult to artificially boost with exports which can sometimes be the case for wholesales data.

First Top 10 finish for the Geely Panda mini.

The situation is starting to be alarming for market leader BYD, freefalling -38.1% this month. All its strong sellers are down heavily except the Sealion 05 (+174.2%) and Yuan Up (+2.2%), while the Qin Plus (-8.5%) and Dolphin (-9.1%) limit their fall. Recent launches such as the Seal 05 (15,327) and Sealion 06 (25,886) prevent a more catastrophic result. Notable falls include the Qin L (-51.4%), Seagull (-52.4%), Destroyer 05 (-64.8%), Yuan Plus (-71.1%), Han (-74.6%) and Song Plus (-79.9%). In contrast, Geely (+25.4%) continues to soar. Its star model the Xingyuan (+185.6%) however recedes from over 50,000 sales last month to just under 39,000 while the Galaxy New Energy sub-brand is up 58.1% to 47,402 units.

The Wuling Hongguang Mini EV is now the #1 model YTD.

Next, Volkswagen (-23.6%) and Toyota (-16%) both dive, as the situation for foreign manufacturers isn’t getting any better in China. Wuling (-4.3%) and Chery (-4.4%) follow, both beating the market but still in negative, while Changan (-24.2%) and Honda (-27.4%) both crater. Audi (+3.6%) lodges a satisfying uptick at #9 while Leapmotor (+54.7%) delivers a second ever Top 10 finish at #10. Xiaomi (+133%) smashes its monthly volume record to 48,203, reaching an all time high #11. AITO (+33.9%) and Xpeng (+78.6%) also impress while Fang Cheng Bao (+384.9%) breaks its volume record for the 2nd month in a row to 28,781 and Arcfox (+85.4%) does exactly the same thing to 20,110. Onvo (+307.4%), MG (+96.7%) and Deepal (+20.1%) also progress below.

The YU7 is up to #4 and lifts Xiaomi to a record volume.

Looking at the models charts in isolation, the Wuling Hongguang Mini EV (+45.7%) dominates head and shoulders with a record 66,249 units, almost 10,000 more than its previous best reached just last month. As a result it overtakes the Geely Xingyuan (+185.6%) to snap the YTD top spot. The BYD Qin Plus (-8.5%) is back up to #3, a ranking it also holds year-to-date. Outstanding performance from the new Xiaomi YU7, up 9 ranks on last month to #4 overall and the #1 SUV in the market. With over 33,000 sales, the YU7 outsells its main competitor the Tesla Model Y (-63.2%) by 2.5 to 1. Note the Model Y L, counted separately, adds up to 6,750 sales. The Nissan Sylphy (-13.9%) is up two spots on September to #5, distancing the new BYD Sealion 06 and the BYD Seagull (-52.4%). The Geely Panda Mini (+6.8%) breaks into the Top 10 for the first time at #10.
