Sweden September 2025: Volvo (+32.2%), Polestar (+97.2%) shine, Tesla (-64%) crashes

The Volvo XC60 holds 8.3% of its home market in September.

25,199 new cars hit Swedish roads in September, a small -2% year-on-year decline. The year-to-date tally is up 5.5% to 204,027. BEV sales sink -16.6% to 9,619 and 38.2% share vs. 44.8% a year ago in September 2024 whereas PHEVs surge 46.8% to 7,622 and 30.2% share vs. 20.2% last year. All in all, rechargeable vehicles hold 68.4% of the Swedish market in September vs. 65% a year ago. The year-to-date share is 62% vs. 56.9% over the same period in 2024.

Volvo (+32.2%) scores a fantastic month at 18.8% share, completely defying the negative context. Volkswagen (+17%) and Toyota (+14.8%) also impress on the podium as does Kia (+5.6%) at #4. Tesla is back up to #5 with 6.8% share but crashes -64% year-on-year. The American carmaker is off -65.4% year-to-date. Polestar (+97.2%) delivers the best performance in the Top 20 and scores a third Top 10 finish of the year. BMW (+39.4%) and Mercedes (+14.2%) also impress.

The Volvo XC60 (+81.6%) maintains a tight grip over its home models charts with a superb 8.3% share, its 2nd highest this year below the 8.4% of April. The Tesla Model Y (-66.4%) ranks #2 overall with 5.5% share but crumbles year-on-year. It is #4 year-to-date vs. #1 over the Full Year 2024. The Volvo EX/XC40 (+26.5%) and Toyota RAV4 (+75.1%) are both down one spot on last month to #3 and #4 respectively while the VW ID.7 (+5.7%) is up one to #5. The Polestar 2 (+228.6%) and 4 (+111%) also stand out.
