India September 2025: Tata and Mahindra at all time high in record market (+5.5%)

The Tata Nexon is the best-selling vehicle in India in September, with a new record volume

Indian wholesales are up 5.5% year-on-year in September to 378,457 units, a new record for the month. The year-to-date tally is now up 0.8% to 3,241,835, also an all-time high at this stage of the year. The GST rate revision implementation on September 22 resulted in effective tax cuts and boosted the market, as did the Navratri festive season. Maruti Suzuki (-8.4%) goes against the record market to fall to 35.1% share, its lowest in four years: since September 2021 (34%). On the other hand Tata (+45.3%) has a fantastic month, breaking its volume record just under 60,000 sales (previous best 53,635 in January 2024) and its share record at 15.8% (previous best 15.1% in December 2023). 87% of Tata’s ICE lineup attracts the lower GST slab, and the results show. Mahindra (+10.1%) also reaches all time high levels with a new volume record at 56,233 (previous best 54,504 in October 2024). As a result Hyundai (+0.9%) is relegated to #4. Skoda (+101%), MG (+46.6%) and Renault (+32.6%) all post brilliant results.

Model-wise, the Tata Nexon (+96.8%) almost doubles its sales year-on-year to storm into pole position for the 2nd time in the nameplate’s career after December 2023. It also smashes its volume record from 17,182 in January 2024 to 22,573. In 2nd place, the Maruti Suzuki DZire (+84.6%) continues to enjoy the benefits of its new generation, passing the 20,000 monthly sales milestone for the second time in the past three months. It cements its YTD lead. The Hyundai Creta (+18.6%) beats its volume best at 18,861 but stays in third place overall. The Mahindra Scorpio (+27.2%) and Tata Punch (+15.9%) are both up 8 spots on August to close out the Top 5, with the Scorpio reaching an all-time high monthly total at 18,372, eclipsing its previous best of 15,677 reached in October 2024. Another record-breaker is the Mahindra Thar (+34%) at 11,846 units. We welcome the Maruti Suzuki Victoris at #29.
