Switzerland August 2025: VW Polo best-seller
The VW Polo is the most popular vehicle in Switzerland in August.
The Swiss new car market edges up 1.3% year-on-year in August to 16,136 units, leading to a year-to-date volume off -4.3% to 148,898. 4×4 sales drop -2.7% to 7,836 and 48.6% share vs. 50.6% a year ago. Petrol sales fall -9.1% to 3,873 and 24% share vs. 26.8% last year, diesel sinks -16.5% to 1,177 and 7.3% share vs. 8.9%, hybrids are up 4.2% to 5,840 and 36.2% share vs. 35.2%, PHEVs soar 61.6% to 1,989 and 12.3% share vs. 7.7% but BEVs decline -4.8% to 3,257 and 20.2% share vs. 21.5% a year ago. Through August, BEV sales are up 8.1% to 30,543 and 20.5% share vs. 18.2% over the same period in 2024.
In the brands ranking, Volkswagen (+36.4%) surges to 11.8% share vs. 10.4% so far this year, distancing an equally healthy BMW (+12.6%) up one spot on July to #2. Mercedes (-13.4%) is also up one rank to #3 despite a steep YoY fall. Skoda (-9.9%) and Audi (-4.8%) also underperform and round out the Top 5. Renault (+41.4%), Toyota (+14.7%) and Dacia (+9%) shine in the remainder of the Top 10. Further down, Cupra (+70.1%) outsells sister brand Seat (-39.3%) while MG (+331%), Citroen (+135.8%), Mini (+65%) and Opel (+39.1%) all soar.
Model-wise, the VW Polo (+80.5%) is the surprise leader, up from #29 in July and #24 year-to-date and signing its first Swiss win since July 2021. The BMW X1 (+72.4%) is up 12 spots on last month to #2 while the VW Tiguan (+23%) is down two to #3 but remains in the lead year-to-date. The Toyota Yaris (+19.1%) and BMW X3 (+49.7%), both in excellent shape, complete the Top 5. Notice also the Audi Q5 up 39.3% to #8 vs. #51 year-to-date and the Kia Sportage up 21 ranks on July to #7 but down -8.8% YoY. The Skoda Elroq is the best-selling recent launch at #10 above the Dacia Bigster at #23 and the Cupra Terramar at #26.
