Iceland August 2025: Tesla manages 1-2, BYD, Xpeng G6 and Opel Frontera break ranking records

The Opel Frontera slides into the Icelandic Top 20 in August.

New car sales in Iceland advance 26.9% year-on-year in August to 589 units, keeping in mind August 2024 was off -60.2% on the year prior. The year-to-date volume is now up 27.3% to 9,738. Tesla (+83.7%) retakes control of the brands charts for the first time since last March with 13.4% share vs. 8.5% year-to-date where it now ranks #3. Toyota (-20.7%) goes against the market with a drastic loss but stays #2. BYD (+208.3%) triples its sales year-on-year to ascends to its first ever Icelandic podium finish at #3. Hyundai (+63.6%) is up two spots on last month to #4 and Skoda (+11.1%) up three to #5. Still the faraway leader through August, Kia (-39.5%) falls to #6 for the month. Suzuki (+1900%), Land Rover (+37.5%) and Mercedes (+35.3%) also beat the market in the remainder of the Top 10.

Looking at models, Tesla returns to its old habits and manages a 1-2 with the Model Y (9.8% share) and Model 3 (3.6%) in the lead. The Suzuki Swift is up to #3, distancing the BYD Sealion 7 and Xpeng G6, the latter signing its first Top 5 finish at #5 (in fact equal #4). The Toyota Land Cruiser is back up 12 spots to #8 and the Volvo EX30 up 7 to #9 just as the BYD Seal U climbs to #10. The Opel Frontera breaks into the Top 20 for the first time at #17.
