USA Full Year 2024: Exclusive State by State rankings now available
The Toyota Tacoma is back to #1 in Hawaii.
In partnership with JATO Dynamics, we can share with you today separate rankings of the Top 20 best-selling vehicles for each U.S. State over the Full Year 2024 (previous years were restricted to Top 5 or Top 10 models). This data is exclusive to BSCB, you won’t find it anywhere else. The methodology for this ranking is different from the monthly/quarterly U.S. data we publish, with pickup variants counted separately – which makes a lot of sense as they are basically different vehicles altogether. This way, the Ford F-Series is split into F-150, F-250 Super Duty, F-350 Super Duty and up, the Chevrolet Silverado into 1500, 2500HD and up, Ram 1500, 2500 and up, etc.
The Ford F-Series wins 19 states in 2024.
All states covered are won by light trucks, the first time in U.S. history this happens. In 2023 one state was won by a car, 4 in 2022, 2 in 2021, 2019 and 2018, 4 in 2017, 6 in 2016, 8 in 2015 and 12 in 2014. Among the light truck wins, 23 go to pickups vs. 27 in 2023, 28 in 2022 and 30 in 2021. 25 go to crossovers vs. 23 in 2023 and 19 in 2022 and 2021, 2 go to vans vs. 1 in 2023, 2022 and 2021 and, novelty, one goes to an MPV: the Chrysler Pacifica in Oklahoma. One state (Louisiana) has only pickups in its Top 5, Utah has 7 pickups in its Top 9, North Dakota has 4 in the Top 4 and 6 in its Top 7, Wyoming has 5 pickups in its Top 6, Arkansas 4 in its Top 4 and Montana and Texas have 4 in their Top 5. District of Columbia and New Jersey are the only two states with no pickups in their Top 10.
The Toyota RAV4 scores 42 Top 5 finishes in 2024, the most of any vehicle.
31 of 51 states are won by U.S. vehicles vs. 34 in 2023, 30 in 2022 and 31 in 2021. This leaves 20 for foreigners this year, vs. 18 in 2023, 22 in 2022 and 21 in 2021 (Puerto Rico is not included in 2024 data). The Top 14 is 100% U.S. in Michigan, Top 9 in North Dakota, Top 6 in South Dakota and Top 5 is in Louisiana and Missouri. Rhodes Island is the only state with no U.S. model in its Top 10. The podium is 100% foreigner in New York and in Florida where the top 3 best-sellers are all Toyota models.
The Honda CR-V is #1 in 5 states in 2024, including New York.
Given the Toyota RAV4 overtook the Ford F-150 in the Full Year 2024 models ranking, it was always going to be very interesting to find out which car won the most states. And in fact it’s the Ford F-150 with 19 wins vs. 25 in 2023. F-150 wins include Georgia, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri and Texas. The Toyota RAV4 secures 14 wins, unchanged on last year and including Colorado, Florida and Massachusetts. The Tesla Model Y stays at 5 wins (California, District of Columbia, Nevada, New Jersey and Washington), the Honda CR-V climbs from 2 wins last year to 5, notably in Illinois, New York and Ohio. The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 follows with 3 wins with the Ram Promaster (New Hampshire), Toyota Tacoma (Hawaii), Jeep Grand Cherokee (Nebraska), Chrysler Pacifica (Oklahoma) and Ford E-Series (Arizona) all at one win.
The Jeep Grand Cherokee is #1 in Nebraska.
Looking at Top 5 finishes, this time the Toyota RAV4 (42 vs. 40 in 2023) overtakes the Ford F-150 (35 vs. 41) with the Honda CR-V (29 vs. 25) exchanging spots with the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 (25 vs. 29). The Tesla Model Y stays at 15, with the Subaru Crosstrek delivering the best progression: going from just two Top 5 finishes in 2023 to 12 this year. The Toyota Camry falls to 11, while the GMC Sierra 1500 doubles its tally to 10. The Ram 1500 is the biggest loser, going from 20 Top 5 finishes in 2023 to just 5 this year The Ford F-250 Super Duty is back in the ranking with 5, while the Chevrolet Trax (4), Toyota Tundra (2) and Nissan Leaf (1) make their first appearance.
