South Africa June 2025: 4th straight double-digit market gain (+18.7%)
The Omoda C5 is the most popular new model in South Africa in June.
New vehicle registrations in South Africa deliver a stunning 4th consecutive month of double-digit year-on-year gains in June at +18.7% to 47,294 units. This is also the 6th straight positive market. This way, the H1 tally is up 13.6% to 278,911. Passenger vehicle sales are up 21.7% for the month to 32,570 and light commercials claim a +14.9% uptick at 12,159. Exports are up a more muted 7.9% for the month (36,343) and 2.6% YTD (195,549). This very positive outlook is connected with the decreasing interest rate, contained inflation and improved credit access across the market.
Toyota (+20%) remains the favourite manufacturer in the country at 24.7% share, in line with the 24.4% it commands over H1. Suzuki (+21.5%) also beats the market in 2nd place, confirming it has now claimed a long term win on the VW Group (-9.8%), in difficulty. Ford (+27.2%) and Hyundai (+22.7%) are also very solid but none more than GWM (+75.1%) at #6. Mahindra (+39.9%), Kia (+28.7%) and Renault (+28%) all shine, with the BMW Group (+22.2%) also outpacing the overall growth rate and climbing to #10 vs. #13 over H1. Newcomers Omoda & Jaecoo and Jetour both fit within the Top 15.
Model-wise, the Toyota Hilux (+24.6%) marks a fifth month in a row at #1, solidifying its YTD domination. The Ford Ranger (+24.1%) repeats at #2, a ranking it now also holds year-to-date, dislodging the Suzuki Swift (+36.6%) down to #8 this month. The Toyota Corolla Cross (+35.1%) also i presses and rounds out the podium above the VW Polo Vivo (-15.6%) and Isuzu D-Max (-6.5%) both struggling. The Chery Tiggo 4 Pro (+31.2%) advances to an all-time best 6th place, also reached exactly a year ago in June 2024. The Suzuki Fronx (+79.4%), GWM Haval Jolion (+51.6%) and Hyundai Grand i10 (+49%) all post outstanding results in the remainder of the Top 10. The Omoda C5 is the best-selling newcomer at #20 ahead of the Toyota Starlet Cross (#21), Mahindra XUV3X0 (#26) and Hyundai Exter (#29).
