New Zealand June 2025: BYD up to #5, places Shark 6 at #6 and Sealion 6 at #14

First Top 20 finish in New Zealand for the BYD Sealion 6.

New vehicle sales in New Zealand rally back up 26% year-on-year in June to 11,862 units. However June 2024 was a low month down -63.1% on the year-prior. The June result includes 8,245 passenger cars (including. SUV), up 36.1% and 3,617 commercials (light and heavy) up a more modest 7.8% to 3,617. Over H1, registrations tilt into positive territory at +0.4% to 63,083 including 44,598 passenger cars (+11.2%) and 18,485 commercials (-18.1%).

Toyota (+21.1%) accounts for a round 20% share vs. 22.6% over H1 with the Top 4 unchanged on May, H1 and the FY2024. Ford (+1.1%) is up to 11.2% share ahead of Mitsubishi (+4.1%) and a soaring Kia (+43.5%). Meanwhile BYD (+726%) equals its ranking record at #5, also reached in December 2023, and breaks its volume and ranking records at 826 and 7% (previous best 651 and 6.7% also in December 2023). Note BYD also ranks at a record #5 in neighbouring Australia. Tesla (+327.1%) and GWM (+95%) also post fantastic lifts, as do Honda (+69.4%), MG (+43.1%) and Subaru (+42.1%) below.

Model-wise, the Ford Ranger (-1.2%) repeats at #1 despite losing ground year-on-year on a particularly high year-ago result. It still holds 7.4% share which is better than its YTD level of 7%. The Toyota RAV4 (+40.5%) climbs back up to #2 and sticks to #1 year-to-date for now. The Toyota Hilux (+11.3%) drops one spot to #3, a ranking it also holds YTD. The Mitsubishi ASX (+91.3%) stays at #4 ahead of the Kia Seltos (+134.9%), Excellent score for the new BYD Shark 6 up to a record 6th place with 3.5% of the market. The Tesla Model Y also impresses at #7 while we welcome the BYD Sealion 6 inside the Top 20 for the first time at #14.
