Taiwan May 2025: Market off -23.1%, Toyota Alphard cracks Top 10
First Taiwanese Top 10 finish for the Toyota Alphard.
New car sales in Taiwan are off a devastating -23.1% year-on-year in May to 31,910 units. This mediocre result is attributed by the local specialised press to a wait-and-see attitude by car buyers amidst the uncertain tariff situation. Meanwhile the year-to-date tally is down -13.8% to 164,647. Toyota (-14.3%) resists better than the market but its share, at 28.2%, is significantly lower than its YTD level (31.2%). Lexus (+4%) stays in 2nd place with 8.2% share, while CMC soars 34.9% to overtake Mercedes (-31.5%) for third place. No additional Top 10 member is in positive, with Kia (-4.5%), Mazda (-12.1%) and Mitsubishi (-19.4%) below the market decline rate. Honda (-39.5%), Nissan (-38.8%) and Volkswagen (-30.5%) are hit hard but not as much as Tesla (-89.2%).
Over in the models charts, the Toyota Corolla Cross (+28.3%) easily retains its crown at 9.4% share, while the new CMC J Space equals its ranking and share records at #2 and 5.1%. Toyota controls the rest of the Top 5 despite harsh falls, with the Town Ace (-32.7%), RAV4 (-31.2%) and Yaris Cross (-31.7%) in tow. The Toyota Alphard is up seven spots on last month to score its first ever Top 10 finish at #10.
