India May 2025: Maruti Suzuki DZire scores first win in over 5 years

The new model lifts the Maruti Suzuki DZire to its first win since January 2020.

New locally produced light vehicles in India are stable in May at +0.2% to 349,713. This is a third consecutive May record, just above the 349,057 of May 2024 and the 334,499 of May 2023. The year-to-date tally is up 2.7% to 1,871,233, also a new record at this stage of the year. Although best ever volumes, the overall growth rate is disappointing for a market with such potential. Maruti Suzuki (-5.6%) falls to 38.9% share vs. 40.6% so far this year. In contrast Mahindra (+21.3%) remains in 2nd place and at 52,431 sales delivers its second highest monthly volume below the 54,504 of last October. Hyundai (-10.8%) and Tata (-11%) both disappoint. In 5th place with 29,280 wholesales, Toyota (+22.2%) also lodges its 2nd highest monthly result below the 29,533 it reached in July 2024. Skoda (+133.7%), MG (+32.2%) and Kia (+14.4%) also impress.

Model-wise, thanks to the new model the Maruti Suzuki DZire (+12.6%) manages its first win since January 2020 and jumps up to #3 year-to-date vs. #8 over the Full Year 2024. Maruti Suzuki monopolises the podium with the Ertiga (+16.2%) and Vitara Brezza (+9.7%) also in great shape. Leader last month, the Hyundai Creta (+1.4%) falls to #4 but still ranks #2 year-to-date. The Mahindra Scorpio (+5%) repeats at a record 5th place, also reached last September. The Maruti Suzuki Fronx (+7.1%) and Tata Nexon (+14.3%) are the only additional gainers in the Top 10. The Skoda Kylaq (#27) is the best-selling recent launch ahead of the MG Windsor (#32), Kia Syros (#33) and Tata Curvv (#35).

  1. They could sell and manufacture the Duster in India if the other brands do it successfully and the Duster is an increasingly better car and has tremendous success in Europe. It is a missed opportunity.

  2. It’s probably not possible to make the Duster cheaper for the Indian market or it wouldn’t be worth it. It wouldn’t be competitive.
Skoda 2 models are really well adapted to the Indian market. Amd numbers are small. Indian Skodas are now exported to Vietnam, where they are completed and equipped differently. Let’s say, Indian Skodas are so cheap, that the Vietnamese wouldn’t want them.
Renault may have the same problem. Make sense designing the Duster for the Indian market to make it sellable? Have many pieces can sell?

  3. The absence of the Duster in India is even more incomprehensible because of this:

The Renault Duster received more awards than any other car brand in India between 2012 and 2015. The Renault Duster received 29 awards in India, and the Renault company 34 awards.

  4. According to Skoda’s union newspaper, doing business in India isn’t easy. Everything has to be made there otherwise big tariffs. Skoda is facing a lawsuit for 2.8 billion USD for misdeclaring parts to customs. With such a small number of cars, that’s big loss for decades.
The Duster is great in Europe and South America..Southeast Asia isn’t for everyone.

  5. @RickM

Some years ago India even exported its Duster to the European right-hand drive markets. The Indian Duster was equivalent to the European Duster.

Could it be an image problem? Renault in India sells very cheap cars and it may be difficult to sell a car that is not cheap for the average Indian. For an Indian to buy a Duster is like for a European to buy an S-Class. It is not a car for everyone, not even for many. The thing is that India is huge. I think Renault should manufacture the Duster in India, since Mahindra or Tata are quite successful with equivalent cars.

  6. Why on earth did Renault stop selling the Duster in India? Incomprehensible and the Sandero/Logan/Jogger should also be sold/manufactured in India. So much potential lost. Dacia’s range is perfect for India and emerging countries, amazing value for money.

    1. LOL 😀 Of course it’s perfect because the Dacia brand was made of Renaults originally developed for India and other emerging countries…

    2. Renault didn’t stop, it were the Indians who stopped!

They felt fooled they got the RuSSian-based Duster, instead of what Renault dared to communicate,
the much safer and more sophisticated Euro Duster!
