India April 2025: Mahindra overtakes Tata, Hyundai, Skoda hits record share

The Mahindra Scorpio lodges its 2nd highest monthly volume in April.

Indian wholesales are up 4.9% year-on-year in April to 353,449 units, a new record for the month, and this for the third consecutive year. The year-to-date tally is up 3.4% to 1,521,520, also a new record at this stage of the year. Brand leader Maruti Suzuki (+0.5%) is stable to 39.2% share vs. 41% so far this year. Mahindra (+27.6%) is the standout performer of the month, up two spots on March to a record 2nd place, reaching its 2nd highest monthly volume at 52,330, below just the 54,504 of last October. As a result Mahindra is also up to 2nd position year-to-date. Tata (-5.6%) and more strikingly Hyundai (-11.6%) suffer with poor scores. In contrast Toyota (+32.8%), MG (+30%) and Kia (+18.3%) all shoot up but the biggest gainer is once again Skoda, up 183.1% year-on-year to a record 2.1% share at #7, single handedly lifted by the new Kylaq (#25).

In the models charts, the Hyundai Creta (+10.2%) repeats at #1 and accounts for 38% of the brand’s sales for the month. The Maruti Suzuki DZire (+7.4%) and Vitara Brezza (-0.8%) follow less than 50 units below. The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga (+16.5%) posts a very solid gain at #4 while the Mahindra Scorpio (+4.9%) is up four spots on last month to #5 with 15,534 sales, the nameplate’s second best outing below the 15,677 of last October. Below the Tata Nexon (+38.4%), the Maruti Swift, Fronx, Wagon R and Baleno round out the Top 10. #1 a year ago, the Tata Punch (-34.8%) dives to #11.

  1. I didn‘t think Skoda would recover again. We‘ll see if the Kylaq will stay successfull. So far models always started good, but fell hard soon after.
