Germany April 2025: BYD outsells Tesla

BYD sells more cars than Tesla in April, albeit both at very low levels.

The German new car market is stable in April at -0.15% year-on-year to 242,728. This is however 22% below the pre-pandemic volumes of April 2019 (310,715). The year-to-date tally is down -3.3% to 907,299. Volkswagen (-2.7%) falls slightly faster than its home market but remains at a high level above 20% share. BMW (+4.2%) overtakes Mercedes (-1.6%) to snap the 2nd spot for the first time this year. Skoda (+22%) posts a fantastic scores and settles the month with 7.8% of the market. Cupra (+125%) surges once again to #9 and 2.9% share. This is below last month’s records of #6 and 3.8% share bout an outstanding result nonetheless, above its sister brand Seat. Fiat (+30.2%), Opel (+20.7%) and Ford (+15.2%) also impress in the remainder of the Top 10, not brands that got us used to such gains recently. Tesla is down -45.9% to #29, outsold by BYD (+755.7%) up to #26 with 0.6% share.

Model-wise, the VW Golf (-41.3%) implodes year-on-year but keeps the lead above the VW Tiguan (+8.6%) overtaking the T-Roc (-20%). As the summer season approaches and campervan fitters get ready, the Fiat Ducato (+42.4%) surges to #4 in a particularly good showing. The Opel Corsa (+90%) and BMW X1 (+40.2%) manage splendid results to fit inside the Top 6. Other outstanding scores are delivered by the VW ID.7 (+584.1%), Audi A6 (+108.8%) and BMW 5 Series (+86.7%). The VW Tayron tops all recent launches, up five spots on last month to #22, distancing the Skoda Elroq at #26 (+53), the Cupra Terramar at #54 (-26), Cupra Tavascan at #59 (+23), Hyundai Inster at #80 (+24) and Kia EV3 at #86 (+20).
