Norway February 2025: Nissan Ariya signs first ever win, Tesla down -48.4%

The Nissan Ariya holds 7% of the Norwegian market in February.

New car sales in Norway are up 21.3% year-on-year in February to 8,949 units, confirming the market is back in shape after a couple of particularly weak years. The year-to-date tally is now up 46.3% to 18,292. BEVs gain 27.5% to 8,477 and 94.7% share vs. 90.9% a year ago and 79.8% in February 2023. Hybrids hold 1.7% share vs. 4.2% a year ago, diesel are at 1.6% vs. 2.7%, PHEVs at 1.6% vs. 2% and petrol at 0.4% vs. 1%. The 4×4 share is 66.2% vs. 63.4% last year.

Volkswagen (+122.7%) shoots up to 14.8% share, yet this is lower than the 17.6% it commands YTD (+224.1%). Tesla (-48.4%) is in complete freefall again at 10.2% share vs. 24.1% in February 2024. This cannot be explained by a lack of cars as there are many new, unregistered Teslas in the country. It would appear that Norwegian customers may be reacting to Elon Musk’s politics, although only the Model Y is affected. Toyota (+0.3%) is stable year-on-year, distancing Nissan (+41.1%), Volvo (+33%) and BMW (+48.4%) all in great shape. Audi (+108.9%) and Kia (+221.7%) do even better below while Mercedes (+57.3%) also stand out at #9. Chinese carmakers hold 11.7% of the Norwegian market in February, with BYD (+52.3%) being their best-seller at #13 ahead of Xpeng (+160.3%) at #14.

Over in the models charts. the Nissan Ariya (+204.4%) manages its first ever monthly win at 7% share, eclipsing its previous best of #3 reached just last month. The Tesla Model Y (-65.5%) is distanced and ends the month at #2 with 6.7% share vs. 23.7% a year ago. Leader last month, the Toyota bZ4X (+47.6%) falls to #3 but holds onto the YTD top spot. Volkswagen places three models inside the Top 6 with the ID.4 (+91.8%), ID.7 (+693.9%) and ID.3 (+139.3%) in tow. The Tesla Model 3 (+1252.2%) repeats at #7 while the new Kia EV3 surges 15 spots on January to crack the Top 10 for the first time at #8.
