Germany January 2025: Cupra and VW ID.7 break into Top 10 in negative market
The VW ID.7 ranks #8 in Germany in January.
New car sales in Germany edge down -2.8% year-on-year in January to 207,649 units. Volkswagen (+11.6%) posts an excellent month to 22.3% share, the carmaker’s highest in almost a decade: since July 2015 (22.5%). Mercedes (-7.5%) is in negative year-on-year but still manage a strong 9.5% share. Skoda (-1%) secures its third ever podium finish after January 2024 (#3) and June 2024 (#2). BMW (+0.9%) is down two spots on December to #4 while Audi (-5.1%) is down one to #5. Seat (+2.9%) and Ford (+3.9%) defy the negative market to rank #6 and #7 respectively but Opel (-45.1%) completely implodes at #8. Cupra (+148.3%) surges to #10, the brand’s very first incursion inside the German Top 10, eclipsing its previous best of #13 reached in October 2022. Other notable results include Volvo up 33%, Renault up 38.1%, MG up 83.6% and Tesla off -59.5%.
Over in the models charts, the VW Golf (-22.6%) suffers year-on-year but still manages 3.7% share which is above its Full Year 2024 level. The VW Tiguan (+4.1%) advances to #2 above the T-Roc (+47.5%) with the Skoda Octavia (-8.6%) back up seven spots on December to #4. The Seat Leon (+23.7%) is up to #5 (including Cupra Leon) ahead of the VW Passat (+21.1%) and Mercedes GLC (+31.2%) also in great shape. The VW ID.7 (+2111.3%!) surges to #8, the nameplate’s first ever German Top 10 finish and halving its previous best ranking of #16 hit last September. The Skoda Enyaq (+109.7%) also make itself noticed at #9, as do the Volvo XC60 (+74.6%) and VW ID.4 (+256.6%).
