Thanks to December sales up 28.8%, the Spanish new car market crosses the 1 million sales mark for the first time since pre-pandemic 2019 at 1,016,885 (+7.1%). Note the December performance may be in part attributed to vehicle replacements after the devastating floods in the Valencia region. Indeed Comunidad Valenciana sales are up 82.8% year-on-year for the month. Sales to rental companies surge 119.4% year-on-year in December to 15,853. In the brands ranking, Toyota (+19.7%) delivers a splendid performance to tighten its grip with a dominant 9.4% share, one percentage point above its 2023 level. It’s simple: Toyota was the #1 carmaker in the country every month bar February when Peugeot led. Volkswagen (+4.8%) gains one spot to #2 with 6.6% of the market while local fare Seat (+11.5%) rallies back up two ranks to close out the podium. Further down, Nissan (+26.5%), Tesla (+26%), Volvo (+25.2%) and Skoda (+20.4%) stand out.
The Top 4 models all outpace the market with double digit gains. The Dacia Sandero (+18%) soars ahead and repeats at #1 with 3.2% share, selling over 10,000 units more than the #2, the Toyota Corolla (+11.5%) up one spot on last year.
