Canada Full Year 2024: Ford F-Series and Toyota RAV4 on top, Honda Civic reclaims passenger car crown

The Canadian new car market is up a sturdy 8.5% year-on-year in 2024 to 1,854,966 units. This is the highest annual volume since pre-pandemic 2019 (1,928,829 sales). Light trucks improve 10.1% to a record 86.6% whereas Passenger cars edge down -2.8% to just 13.4%. According to Desrosiers Automotive, the most dynamic segments are small vans (+28.9%), compact SUVs (+20.9%) and large vans (+16.6%). At the other end of the spectrum, luxury cars are down -10.9%, subcompact cars off -11.1% and compact luxury cars down -11.3%.
General Motors (+11.8%) remains the most popular OEM, gaining more than 30,000 sales over 2023. In 2nd place, Ford Motor (+16.4%) does even better with almost 40,000 additional units. Toyota Motor (+5%) stays in third place above Hyundai-Kia (+8.9%) and Nissan/Mitsubishi (+11.7%). Notice also the freefall of Stellantis (-18%) and the great performances of the Volkswagen Group (+14.8%) and JLR (+20.1%).The Ford F-Series lodges a 16th consecutive year atop the Canadian charts.
Brand-wise, Ford (+15.6%) is in the lead for the 16th year in a row with a strong performance seeing it increase the gap over #2 Toyota (+6.6%) from 37,000 units to over 60,000. Chevrolet (+13.7%) and Hyundai (+13.9%) also beat the market below with Honda (+9.9%) and GMC (+4.2%) more muted. Volkswagen (+28.2%), Subaru (+23.8%) and Mazda (+23.2%) shoot up whereas Ram (-21.2%) struggles and slips out of the Top 10. Jeep (-20.4%) is also in trouble. Further down, Buick (+43.7%), Lincoln (+36.4%) and Land Rover (+21.2%) impress.
The Toyota RAV4 is up to a record 2nd place.
Looking at the models ranking, the Ford F-Series (+8.6%) tightens its grip on the charts even further to sports a 16th consecutive year at #1 (no interruption since 2009). The F-Series is also the most popular pick-up truck in the country for the 59th year in a row and represents a 36% share of the Canadian pickup market. In a record 2nd place with a record volume we find the Toyota RAV4. It has been the #1 SUV in the count for 9 straights years now and represents almost 40% of the brand’s Canadian sales. The RAV4 alongside the GMC Sierra (+0.8%) take advantage of the collapse of the Ram Pickup (24.3%) down two spots to #4. The Honda CR-V (+6.2%) holds onto the SUV 2nd place and overtakes the Chevrolet Silverado (+1.4%) to claim #5. The Nissan Rogue (+22.8%), Ford Escape (+58.6%) and Hyundai Kona (+33.8%) all lodge fantastic gains in the remainder of the Top 10. An important event is the return of the Honda Civic (+14.3%) atop the passenger cars ranking after being toppled by the Toyota Corolla (-8%) in 2022 and 2023. This marks the Civic’s 25th win in the past 27 years.
