South Africa November 2024: VW Polo Vivo upsets Toyota Hilux

VW Polo Vivo sales are up 56.8% year-on-year in November.

The South African new vehicle market lodges a second solid month in a row in November at +8.1% year-on-year to 48,585 units. This means the year-to-date tally is now down -3.5% to 474,469. However exports continue to freefall at -28.6% to 30,431 for the month and -23.9% to 283,454 year-to-date. Passenger vehicles surge 20% to 35,101 whereas light commercials freefall -16.3% to 10,827.

The Top 8 manufacturers are unchanged on last month, all of them posting year-on-year gain. Toyota (+1.8%) is weak but easily keeps the lead at 24.9% share. It distances the Volkswagen Group (+14.7%) and Suzuki (+37.5%) both beating the market. Chery (+33.6%), GWM (+18.7%) and Hyundai (+16.1%) also shine while Ford (+5.5%) ad Isuzu (+4.2%) are more discreet.

Model-wise, the VW Polo Vivo (+56.8%) surges to first place, unsettling the Toyota Hilux (-12.1%) which had been #1 without interruption since April 2023. The Hilux however remains firmly in command year-to-date. In the process the Polo Vivo advances to #2 year-to-date, passing the Ford Ranger (+0.6%) down to #4 this month. The Toyota Corolla Cross (+50.3%) and Suzuki Swift (+59%) also lodge fantastic result to round out the Top 5. The new Mahindra XUV30 is up three spots on October to #22 just as the Omoda C5 breaks into the Top 30 for the first time at #30.
