Malaysia August 2024: Perodua holds 46.3% share, Bezza, Axia and Myvi on top

The Perodua Bezza holds 14.2% of the Malaysian market in August.

Today is a big day: for the first time since 2016 we have access to detailed models data for Malaysia, with brands also available. In August, 74,955 new cars hit Malaysian roads. Perodua is the most popular carmaker in the country by far with an outstanding 46.3% share which is near record volumes (it reached 51.1% in May 2018), seeing as it grabbed 41.3% over the Full Year 2023. Fellow local but Geely-owned Proton holds onto the 2nd place with 16.5% share vs. 18.9% in 2023. Toyota improves to 14.2% at #3 and Honda remains just above the 10% share threshold at 10.1%. In a cliffhanger ranking, the next best-selling brand, Mazda at #5, only has 1.6% of the market. A surprise in the Top 10 is Jaecoo at #8 with 1.1 share.

Perodua places five models in the August Top 6: the Bezza is the leader with 14.2% share, selling almost exactly as much as the entire Toyota range. The Axia takes the second place at 10.3% share ahead of the Myvi at 9%. The old Proton Saga is the odd one out at #4, distancing the Perodua Alza and Ativa. The Honda City at #7 is the best of the rest, with Toyota placing the Vios at #8 and the Hilux at #10. The Proton X50, a rebadged Geely Coolray, points its bonnet at #9. Notice also the Proton S70, a 4th generation Geely Emgrand twin, at #17, the Jaecoo J7 at #21, the Tesla Model 3 at #31 and the BYD Atto 3 at #37.
