Sweden August 2024: Volvo up 22.9%, Tesla Model Y clear leader, sales off -20.3%

The Tesla Model Y is back atop the Swedish charts.

It’s another difficult month for Swedish new car sales, off -20.3% year-on-year in August to 19,036 units. This brings the year-to-date volume to -7.8% and 167,667 registrations. Rechargeable cars hold a 56% market share this month, vs. 60.1% in August 2023. In the detail, BEVs are off -30.6% to 6,790 and 35.7% share vs. 41% a year ago and PHEVs stumble down -15.2% to 3,863 and 20.3% share vs. 19.1% in August 2023. For once Volvo (+22.9%) has a strong summer even though its 13.2% August share is well below its YTD level of 17.4%. Volkswagen (-38.5%) almost doubles the market drop but stays in 2nd place with 11.5% share. Toyota (-19.3%) is close to the market evolution and climbs three spots on July to #3, distancing Kia (-24.5%) and Tesla (-21.5%). Mercedes (+27.9%) is the only additional Top 10 member in positive. Cupra (+24%) equals its highest ranking at #11, also hit last May, and breaks its share record at 2.6%, eclipsing the 2.5% it reached last April. Subaru (+55.6%), Fiat (+33.3%) and Dacia (+20.1%) are also in great shape.

Over in the models aisle, the Tesla Model Y (-26.9%) easily reclaims the top spot, both for the month and year-to-date, despite a significant year-on-year loss. It sells more than twice the amount of the #2, the Volvo XC40 (-3.6%) in August. The rest of the Top 5 is entirely composed of Volvos, with the XC60 (-2.5%), S/V60 (+29.1%) and new EX30 in tow. The VW T-Roc (+3.8%) is up 16 spots on July to #6 but the ID.4 implodes at -72.6% and #7. The Toyota RAV4 (-40.1%), Skoda Enyaq (-36.8%) and Kia Sportage (-26.2%) also fall even faster than the market in the remainder of the Top 10. In contrast the Skoda Kodiaq (+216.2%), Peugeot 5008 (+102.3%), Toyota Yaris Cross (+47.7%) and Yaris (+39.4%) all impress.
