Norway August 2024: BEVs reach record 94.3% share

Audi Q4 e-Tron sales are up 86.4% year-on-year in August.

11,114 new cars hit Norwegian roads in August, a meagre 0.3% year-on-year improvement. The year-to-date tally meanwhile remains in negative at -7.4% to 78,832. In contrast with the rest of Europe, this month BEVs break their market share record in Norway at a surreal 94.3% vs. 83.5% a year ago. The previous record was 92.1% last January. At 10,480 for the month, BEVs are up 13.3% year-on-year but down -3.2% year-to-date to 68,444 and 86.8% share vs. 83% over the same period a year ago. PHEVs freefall -77.8% to 161, HEVs are off -63.1% to 249, petrol is at 0.5% share vs. 1.1% in August 2023 and diesel is at 1.5% vs. 2.8%. Notice also the record market share of 4×4 vehicles at 75.1% vs. 66.5% a year ago and 68.1% year-to-date vs. 64.5% in 2023.

Tesla (+45.8%) reclaims the brands top spot it holds year-to-date with an unattainable 22.4% share, almost double the #2 Volvo (+122.6%) also euphoric. Volkswagen (-10.9%) and Skoda (-1.8%) underperform below. BMW (+46.5%) and Audi (+42.6%) also impress just as Hyundai (+3.3%) lodges a measured positive result. Toyota (-38.8%), Mercedes (-32.3%) and Nissan (-42.6%) crater. Further down, Xpeng (+690.9%), BYD (+92%) and Mazda (+54.9%) stand out.

Model-wise, the Tesla Model Y (+45.1%) overwhelms the competition with almost one fifth of all sales. Its year-to-date tally is however down -37.5%. It is followed like YTD by the new Volvo EX30, up two spots on July. The Skoda Enyaq (+2.3%) repeats at #3 but sinks -45% year-to-date at #10. #1 last month, the VW ID.4 (-18%) falls to #4 ahead of the Toyota bZ4X (+26.4%). The rest of the Top 10 bar the Nissan Ariya (-5.2%) all post double-digit year-on-year lift. The most dynamic is the Audi Q4 e-Tron (+86.4%), with the Tesla Model 3 (+57.5%), VW ID.3 (+54.3%) and BMW i4 (+43.3%).
