Greece August 2024: Toyota hits record share in freefalling market

The Toyota Yaris Cross is the best-selling vehicle in Greece in August.

New car sales in Greece freefall -21.4% year-on-year in August, yet thanks to a solid start of the year the YTD tally remains in positive at +5.7% to 98,374. Brand leaders Toyota (+19.3%) and Suzuki (+8.7%) defy the poor market to lodge significant year-on-year upticks. Toyota notably hits 23.1% share, a new record eclipsing the 21.8% it reached last June. In contrast Peugeot (-42.4%), Kia (-38.3%) and Hyundai (-25.8%) crumble while Volkswagen (-1.8%) resists at #5 vs. #12 last month. BMW (+64.7%) and Ford (+9.1%) also excel in the remainder of the Top 10.

Over in the models charts, the Toyota Yaris Cross (+148.7%) surges back to #1, a ranking it also holds year-to-date vs. #4 over the Full Year 2023. At 10.7% share, it however can’t quite match its record of 12.8% hit last June. The Toyota Yaris (-34.1%) follows but struggles. The Peugeot 2008 (+6%) and Suzuki Vitara (-27.9%) camp on their July ranking at #3 and #4 respectively while the Hyundai i20 (-9.5%) rounds out the Top 5. Outstanding performances also for the Suzuki Ignis (+378.6%), BMW X1 (+209.3%), Toyota Corolla Cross (+178.7%), breaking into the Top 10 for the first time at #9, and Toyota C-HR (+90.7%).

Previous month: Greece July 2024: Toyota Yaris back in charge in negative market

One year ago: Greece August 2023: Fiat Panda repeats at #1, sales up 19.8%

  1. There are many unreliable cars, especially when the warranty runs out, especially European cars are not very reliable. and also repairs are increasingly expensive.

  2. There are almost none unreliable cars anymore. Suzukis sales are limited because they have only the new Swift and very old Vitara and S-Cross. Both SUVs have nothing special and are totally boring. They should have brought the Jimny 5-door to Europe.
Greece is 90s hatch/compact sedan heaven anyway. Tons of Hyundai Accents, even Pony, Peugeot 306, Alfa 145/146, Citroen Xsara, Daewoo Lanos, Nissan Almera and so on driving around.

    1. I think a lot of Suzukis are bought by retirees and women. I agree, no emotions, just a good price. But you’ll love it at second glance. Great engines, analog tacho like on motorbikes. Cars for puritans.
The Swift is very good, but the VW Group revived Polo, small Seat models and Fabia, thus narrowing the space for STLA models, and the other small japanise with hybrids.
Jimny 5 doors unfortunately don’t work. Brand must pay a penalty for increased fleet emissions. This is why Suzuki adapts 2 Toyota models with a bad result. If I want a Suzuki, I don’t buy a Toyota rebadge. Suzuki is like Mazda, unique.

  3. Unfortunately, Toyota doesn’t have a competitive BEV. Suzuki has nothing at all. This limits them in sales in some markets. VW is ahead.
Despite the collapse in oil prices, BEV sales will rise again. As part of the climate packages, a large tax on gasoline is expected, and most car manufacturers have retreated from diesel. Overall, the market is uncertainty and lot of people are hesitating whether to buy something and what regulation will come. They will bet on BEVs with increasing supply.

We have to wait for the European ACEA results how big the gap between VW and Toyota will be. Toyota isn’t having a good month either.

  4. I have never seen Corolla Cross so high anywhere in Europe.
According to official price lists, the Yaris Cross is almost 4,000 euros more expensive than the Suzuki Vitara. Toyota is already like VW, image is expensive. Maybe rental companies get different prices from Toyota.
Suzuki are very practical, modest and reliable cars. Very underappreciated in Europe.
