Argentina August 2024: VW Polo on podium for the first time in first positive market of the year

The VW Polo ranks #3 in Argentina in August, a record.

The Argentinean new vehicle market is in positive for the first time this year at +4.9% to 38,823 sales. Given the start of the year was horrendous, the year-to-date volume is still down a hefty -16.1% to 253,403 units. Toyota (-5.4%) can’t capitalise on the market growth and establishes itself at 22% share, almost exactly its YTD level. Volkswagen (+55.7%) surges ahead in 2nd place to 18.1% share vs. 15.9% so far this year. Fiat (-4.8%) is weak but overtakes Ford (+5%) for third place. Peugeot (+10.8%) is also solid at #5, distancing struggling Renault (-31.5%) and Chevrolet (-31.1%). Jeep (+472.4%) and Citroen (+152.3%) stun with fantastic gains, with Ram (+5200%) lodging a surreal uptick at #12.

Model-wise, the Toyota Hilux (+18%) is the best-seller for the 4th month running with a very solid 8.4% share. It however remains #2 year-to-date below a freefalling Fiat Cronos (-52%) down to #5 for the month. The Peugeot 208 (-0.6%) is stable in 2nd place ahead of a surging VW Polo (+472.9%) scoring its first ever podium finish at #3 (previous best: #7 in July 2018). The Ford Ranger (-17.8%) is in difficulty at #4, but the Jeep Renegade (+826.9%), Toyota Yaris (+63.9%), Corolla Cross (+55.4%) and VW Taos (+13.5%) all impress.
