Europe June 2024: Toyota (+16.4%), Skoda (+12.1%) stand out, Sandero #1 over H1
Toyota sales are up 16.4% year-on-year in June

According to preliminary data by ACEA, the European new car market (EU+EFTA+UK) is up 3.6% year-on-year in June to 1,310,989 sales, leading to a H1 2024 tally up 4.4% or 290,000 units to 6,879,438. Among the main 5 markets, Italy (+15.1%), Germany (+6.1%), Spain (+2.2%) and the UK (+1.1%) are up but France (-4.8%) is down. The best performing markets are Romania (+62.1%), Cyprus (+27.7%), Austria (+25.2%), Hungary (+23.9%) and Poland (+20.8%). Reversely Ireland (-50.2%), Iceland (-37.7%), Finland (-26.2%), Estonia (-19.9%), Latvia (-16.4%) and the Netherlands (-11.9%) all fall. Over H1, all 5 main markets are in positive, with the most dynamic being the UK (+6%) ahead of Spain (+5.9%), Italy (+5.4%), Germany (+5.4%) and France (+2.8%). Bulgaria (+30.8%), Poland (+16%), Cyprus (+15%), Croatia (+14.5%), Romania (+13.4%), Hungary (+11.9%) and Malta (+11.6%) shine whereas Iceland (-38.1%), Finland (-16.5%), Estonia (-16.2%) and Latvia (-12.7%) skid.
Once again BEV sales disappoint, lagging behind the market growth rate at +0.8% to 208,872 and 15.9% share vs. 16.5% a year ago in June 2023. The largest market for BEVs is Germany at 43,412 sales (-18.1%) for a 14.6% share, followed by the UK with 34,034 (+7.4%) for a 19% share, France at 29,837 (-10.3%) for a 16.4% share, Norway at 14,001 (+9.4%) for a 80% share. H1 2024 BEV sales edge up 1.6% to 954,094 and 13.9% share vs. 14.2% over H1 2023. Germany BEV sales are off -16.4% to 184,125, the UK is up 9.2% to 167,096, France up 14.9% to 158,402, Belgium up 47.8% to 64,404 and Norway down -5.9% to 52,018. Overall in June PHEV sales are down -13.6% to 86,094, HEVs surge 24.2% to 396,294, petrol edges down -3.3% to 442,443 and diesel is at -2.2% to 145,858.
The Volkswagen Group (+3.2%) roughly matches the market atop the groups charts, distancing Stellantis (-1.8%). Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi (+9.4%) is in great shape, but the Toyota Group does even better at +14.7%. Hyundai-Kia (-4.2%), the BMW Group (-2.1%) and Mercedes (-1.5%) all recede year-on-year. In the brands ranking, Volkswagen (+3.8%) leads the way above a surging Toyota (+16.4%) while Renault (+8.2%), BMW (+8.7%) and Skoda (+12.1%) all beat the market to round out the Top 5. Audi (-7.7%) and Mercedes (+2.1%) follow and Dacia (+8.5%) advances three spots on May to #8, outselling Peugeot (-10.6%). The best performers below are Mitsubishi (+68.7%), Volvo (+29.7%), Suzuki (+27.3%) and Cupra (+26.9%). At the other end of the stick, Mini (-35%), Ford (-23%), Porsche (-15.6%) and Tesla (-12.7%) struggle.
Model-wise, the Dacia Sandero (+17%) is very solid and cements its YTD domination, it is followed this month by the Renault Clio (+5.2%) and May’s leader the VW T-Roc (+4%). The Tesla Model Y (-32.5%), although back up 14 spots on last month to #4, isn’t the juggernaut of last year, pointing at a disappointing 8th place over H1. The VW Golf (+24%) confirms it is back in business and ranks at #2 year-to-date vs. #7 over the Full Year 2023. The Tesla Model 3 (+40%) is pushed up by its facelift but still ranks at a low #27 year-to-date. Excellent performances also by the Citroen C3 (+43.2%), Dacia Duster (+28.7%) and Toyota Yaris Cross (+19.2%)
