China retail July 2024: BYD places 5 models in Top 6, smashes records as do Li Auto, NIO, Leapmotor

The BYD Qin L is up to #5 in China in July

We can share with you today All brands and All models retail sales data for China in July. Sales for the selection of vehicles included in this report edge up 2.9% year-on-year to 1,767,231 units. The year-to-date volume is also in positive at +2.2% to 11,148,670. BSCB is the only non-Chinese medium to cover both wholesales (ex-factory shipments) and retail sales data for China so you can get the most complete picture of the largest new car market in the world. Retail sales tend to give a more authentic picture of the market as they roughly correspond to registrations by end-customers and are more difficult to artificially boost with exports which can sometimes be the case for wholesales data.

BYD (+48.9%) smashes its monthly volume record, beating its previous best achieved in June by almost 36,000 units. The Destroyer 05 (+187%), Seal (+65.2%), Seagull (+54.1%) push the brand up but once again its stratospheric level is reached thanks to a slew of very successful launches such as the Qin L (32,500 sales for its 2nd month in market!), Seal 06 (22,006) and Yuan UP (10,998). In contrast Volkswagen (-14.7%) continues to freefall despite strong scores by the Teramont X (+48.7%), Passat (+23.2%), ID.4 X (+145%), ID.4 Crozz (+11.3%) and Teramont (+10.6%) and the arrival of the new generation Tiguan, called Tiguan L Pro.

Leapmotor crosses the 20,000 monthly sales mark for the first time.

Toyota (-1.8%), Geely (-14.9%), Wuling (-3.2%), Honda (-37.9%) and Changan (-36.3%) follow, all in negative. Chery (+39.9%) manages a fantastic uptick and climbs five spots on June to #8. Li Auto (+51.7%) cracks the Top 10 for the first time at #10 and breaks its monthly volume record just under 51,000 units. AITO (+833.9%) lodges its second highest ever monthly sales result and ranks #15 overall. Jetour soars 115.3% to 30,168, also its 2nd largest volume ever. Other record breakers include NIO (+15.9%), Leapmotor (+75.9%) above the 20,000 sales mark for the first time and newcomers Galaxy and Xiaomi.

Looking at the models ranking in isolation, the BYD Qin Plus (+21.3%) stays in the lead, with the Top 4 unchanged on June and all delivering double digit year-on-year lifts. The Tesla Model Y is up 50.6% at #2, the BYD Seagull up 54.1% to #3 and the BYD Song Plus up 24.5% to #4. The event of the month is the surge of the new BYD Qin L, up 11 spots on last month to #5 for its 2nd month in market. The Yuan Plus (+18.9%) makes it five BYD models in the Top 6. The VW Lavida (+8.5%) posts a rare year-on-year gain at #7 while the new Li L6 is up one rank on June to a record 8th place.
