Portugal May 2024: Tesla Model 3 best-seller for the 2nd time ever

The Tesla Model 3 is the favourite of Portuguese car buyers in May.

The Portuguese new car market edges up 0.2% year-on-year in May to 19,850 sales, leading to a year-to-date volume up 9.2% to 96,224. Peugeot (-16.7%) is back to the brands pole position it holds year-to-date even though it falls hard YoY. Mercedes (+35.9%) stays #2 with an excellent score, distancing Volkswagen (+3.9%). Renault (-39.7%) is hit hard at #4 just as BMW (+3.4%) drops back one spot on last month to #5. Leader last month, Dacia (-5.3%) recedes to #6 but still ranks #3 year-to-date. Citroen (+44.9%) and Toyota (+42.3%) both lodge fantastic results in the remainder of the Top 10 while Tesla (+4.5%) is up six ranks on April to #9. Below, Volvo (+62.8%), Hyundai (+35.2%), Kia (+29.9%) and Audi (+27.9%) stand out.

The Tesla Model 3 (+96.6%) doubles its sales year-on-year to become the best-selling vehicle in the country. It is the second time the American model holds this position in Portugal after last November. The Renault Clio (-42%) implodes year-on-year but still manages a strong 2nd place. Still leader year-to-date, the Dacia Sandero (+5%) falls to #3 for the month. The leader of 2023, the Peugeot 2008 (-14.1%) rallies back up 11 spots on last month to #4. The Citroen C3 (+496.3%) is boosted to #5 by rushed registrations on the outgoing generation, with the Toyota Yaris Cross (+438.2%) similarly euphoric. The VW T-Roc (+61.2%) and Seat Ibiza (+36.6%) also make themselves noticed.
