Norway April 2024: Volvo EX30 posts first ever win

The Volvo EX30 is the best-selling vehicle in Norway in April.

New car sales in Norway gain 25.2% year-on-year in April to 11,241 units, but the year-to-date tally remains in negative at -11% to 33,493. BEV sales climb 34.5% to 10,051 and 89.4% share vs. 83.3% in April 2023 and 74.2% two years ago. Year-to-date, they edge down -5% to 30,124 and 89.9% share vs. 84.2% over the first four months of 2023. Meanwhile HEV registrations are up 30.3% to 520 for the month but down -31.3% YTD to 1,553 and PHEVs crumble -74.7% to 178 in April and -71.9% to 629 YTD. Diesel holds 3.2% of the market vs. 2.6% YTD and petrol is at 1.2% share vs. 1% year-to-date.

The Top 3 manufacturers all beat the market, with Volkswagen (+38.9%) jumping to #1 for the month at #2 year-to-date. Volvo (+97.1%) does even better at #2 , followed by Toyota (+37.2%). Tesla (-10.6%) drops to 4th place overall with just 7.8% share vs. 17.9% so far this year where it is down a daunting -42.6%. MG (+240.1%) surges ahead to its best performance since July 2022 at #5 and 5.8% share. Hyundai (+59.7%) is the only remaining Top 10 member to outrun the market at #9. Notice also Honda (+4633.3%!), BYD (+688.9%) and Polestar (+302.2%) all posting fantastic gains.

Over in the models lane, we have a fresh new leader: the new Volvo EX30 at a stunning 10.6% share. This is the first time in the world the EX30 leads any monthly charts. Volkswagen places two models on the podium: the ID.4 (+63.8%) and ID.3 (+91.6%). The Tesla Model Y (-23.8%) is down to an unusual 4th place with 6.2% share but remains the faraway YTD leader with 16.1% of the market. The Hyundai Kona (+258%), MG 4 (+198.3%) and Toyota bZ4X (+120.9%) also impress in the remainder of the Top 10.
