Chile September 2023: Great Wall Poer signs first ever win, sales sink -30.5%
The Great Wal Poer is the best-selling vehicle in Chile in August.
The economic contraction – which according to the latest figures from the Monthly Indicator of Economic Activity, IMACEC, is deeper than estimated – the restrictions on access to financing for families and entrepreneurs, together with the lower liquidity of Chilean households continue to affect the automotive sector in September with a searing -30.5% year-on-year loss to just 25,503 sales. The year-to-date tally is now off -29% to 236,079. Passenger Cars are down -44% to 5,341, SUVs off -20.1% to 12,610, pickups down -38.5% to 5,256 and vans resist best at -19.5% to 2,296.
In the brands ranking, Toyota (-16.6%) resists relatively well to keep the lead with 8% share, distancing a strong Hyundai (-5.7%) and a freefalling Chevrolet (-43.5%). Nissan (+19.3%) signs the only year-on-year gain in the Top 9 and is followed by Suzuki (-31.8%), Kia (-38.8%) and Peugeot (-24.7%). Ford (-25.2%) also beats the market slightly at #8 while MG (-41.4%) struggles at #9. Citroen (+112.2%) is the best performer in the Top 10. Below, Mazda (+140.4%), Haval (+109.5%) and Opel (+24.6%) also post market-defying gains. As a whole, Chinese manufacturers are down -42.2% to 26.8% share vs. 28.3% so far this year.
Over in the models charts, the Great Wall Poer (+25.2%) spectacularly signs its first ever win in Chile with 2.5% share. The Toyota Hilux (-26.6%) is back up four spots on August to #2 and stays in the YTD pole position. The Nissan Navara (+69.8%) up 22 ranks to #3 and the Ford Ranger (-41.1%) at #4 make sure the Top 4 models are all pickup trucks. The Chevrolet Groove (-17.7%) aka Baojun 510 is the best of the rest at #5. Notice the Suzuki Baleno (+907.7%), Haval Jolion (+97.4%), MG ZS (+27.2%) and Nissan Versa (+12.7%) all in fantastic shape in the remainder of the Top 10.
