UK June 2023: Tesla Model Y and Ford Puma top market up 25.8%

The Ford Puma remains in the YTD lead in the UK.

177,266 new cars hit UK roads in June, a very solid 25.8% year-on-year improvement. However we remain slightly below the 186,128 units of June 2021 and 20.6% below the 223,421 sales of June 2019. The H1 2023 volume is up 18.4% to 949,720. Private sales do not drive the growth of the market at just +14.8% to 79,798 and 45% share vs. 49.3% a year ago whereas fleets surge 37.9% to 92,699 and 52.3% share vs. 47.7% in June 2022. Business sales are up 12.7% to 4,769 and 2.7% share vs. 3%. The year-to-date picture is even more pronounced towards fleets up 38.4% to 490,723 and 51.7% share vs. 44.2% over H1 2022 whereas private sales only edge up 1.7% to 435,325 resulting in a 45.8% market share vs. 53.4% a year ago. Business sales are up 21.1% to 23,672 and 2.5% share vs. 2.4%.

Diesel sales drop -22.3% to 6,221 and 3.5% share vs. 5.7% in June 2022, petrol is up 13.5% to 70,367 but loses significant share at 39.7% vs. 44% a year ago, MHEVs are up 38% to 35,217 and 19.9% share vs. 18.1% last year, BEVs surge 39.4% to 31,700 and 17.9% share vs. 16.1% in June 2022, PHEVs gain 65.5% to 12,770 and 7.2% share vs. 5.5% and HEVs climb 40.1% to 20,991 and 11.8% share vs. 10.6%. Year-to-date, diesel is down -18.6% to 37,456 and 3.9% share vs. 5.7% last year, petrol is up 13.2% to 397,577 and 41.9% share vs. 43.8%, MHEVs are up 22.6% to 179,894 and 19% share vs. 18.3%, BEVs are up 32.7% to 152,968 and 16.1% share vs. 14.4%, PHEVs gain 21.2% to 62,155 and 6.5% share vs. 6.4% and HEVs soar 30.6% to 119,670 and 12.6% share vs. 11.4%.

In the brands ranking, Volkswagen (+30.2%) reclaims the top spot it holds year-to-date with 8.6% share, distancing Ford (+49.2%) in great shape at 8.3% of the market. Surprise leader last month, Audi (+59.4%) falls back to #3 but is up very significantly year-on-year. BMW (+22.5%) is up three spots on May to #4 despite trailing the market. Vauxhall (-0.4%) remains in 5th place vs. #7 over H1, ahead of Kia (+4.1%), Toyota (+2.9%) and Hyundai (+9.6%) all underperforming. At #9, Mercedes (+22.4%) can’t quite catch up with the market while Nissan (+49.7%), MG (+41.4%), Tesla (+34.6%) and Skoda (+36.3%) all shine below. Lexus (+212.2%), Mazda (+103.9%), Volvo (+93.6%), Renault (+88%), Cupra (+85%) and Honda (+84.7%) stand out further down.

Over in the models lane, the Tesla Model Y (+32.1%) signs a 4th monthly win at 3.1% share, only 86 sales above the Ford Puma (+85.4%). The Puma retains the year-to-date lead while the Model Y climbs to #4. The Vauxhall Corsa (-17.3%) ranks third above the Hyundai Tucson (+33.3%) and Nissan Juke just as the Nissan Qashqai (+8.2%) is down four spots on last month to #6. The Mini (+5.5%) reappears inside the Top 10 at #7 above the Toyota Yaris, Kia Sportage and Vauxhall Mokka, the latter earning a spot in the H1 2023 Top 10 at #10.
