Sweden June 2023: Tesla Model Y leads, Kia EV6 up to #6

Kia EV6 sales are up 184.1% year-on-year in June.

New car sales in Sweden gain 8.4% year-on-year in June to 28,283 units, a weak result given June 2022 was off -27.7% on the year prior. The H1 2023 result remains down at -2.4% to 140,663. BEVs are up 33% year-on-year for June to 10,956 and 38.7% share vs. 31.6% a year ago whereas PHEVs drop -5.5% to 5,798 and 20.5% share vs. 23.5% in June 2022. All-in-all, rechargeable cars hold a whopping 59.2% market share this month vs. 55.1% over the same month in 2022. Volkswagen (+17.1%) topples Volvo (+5.3%) for the first time since last September with 12.3% share vs. 11.6% for the homegrown brand. Tesla (+47.9%) invites itself to third place with 10.7% of the market vs. #5 and 7.8% so far this year. Toyota (+21.4%) easily beats the market to stay at #4, with Audi (+42%) and Skoda (+15.4%) in the same situation.

Model-wise, the Tesla Model Y (+26.7%) repeats at #1 with 8.4% share, selling 2.2 times any other nameplate in the market. It cements its YTD lead whereas it ranked #7 over the Full Year 2022. The Volvo XC60 (-14.3%) ranks second but underperforms year-on-year while the VW ID.4 (+28.1%) posts a very solid score and rounds out the podium. The leader of 2022, the Volvo XC40 (+11.8%) is relegated to 4th place this month ahead of the Toyota RAV4 (+66.4%) and a flamboyant Kia EV6 (+184.1%) lodging a third Top 10 finish so far this year. Only the Tesla Model 3 (+165.1%) outpaces the market in the remainder of the Top 10. Below, the BMW i4 (+102.7%), Polestar 2 (+55.7%) and Audi Q4 e-Tron (+308.5%) stand out.
