Europe June 2023: Audi (+43.7%), Tesla (+110.6%), MG (+142.3%) impress, sales up 18.7%
MG sales surge 142.3% year-on-year across Europe in June.

According to preliminary data by ACEA, new car sales in Europe (EU+EFTA+UK) climb 18.7% or 200,000 units year-on-year in June to 1,265,658. Note June 2022 was down -16.8% on the year prior. BEV sales surge 55.3% to 208,882 and 16.5% share vs. 12.6% in June 2022, PHEVs are up 17.7% to 99,592 and 7.9% share, identical to a year ago, HEVs gain 33.4% to 318,367 and 25.2% share vs. 22.4%, petrol is up 11.3% to 458,449 and 36.2% share vs. 38.6% and diesel sinks -9.9% to 149,261 and 11.8% share vs. 15.5% during the same month last year.
Among the Top 5 markets, the UK is up 25.8%, Germany up 24.8%, Spain up 13.3%, France up 11.5% and Italy up 9.1%. Best performers for the month are Belgium (+48.7%), Croatia (+43.7%), Portugal (+41.7%), Netherlands (+37.8%) and Bulgaria (+34.7%). In the groups ranking, the VW Group (+26.8%) vastly outpaces the market to end the month above 325,000 units. For its part Stellantis (-2.5%) underperforms while Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi (+6.4%) and Hyundai-Kia (+4.8%) are weak. The BMW Group (+15.8%) and Toyota Group (+11.3%) also trail the market.
Brand-wise, Volkswagen (+23.8%) is solid in first place while Renault (+11.7%) rises three spots on May to #2, its highest ranking since December 2021 (also #2). Toyota (+8.1%) stays in third place but remains #2 year-to-date like it was over the Full Year 2022. Audi (+43.7%) posts a splendid gain but stays #4. Skoda (+28.9%) also beats the market at #8. BMW (+12.9%), Mercedes (+13.6%) and Kia (+15.3%) can’t keep up with the market growth and Peugeot (-6.5%) and Dacia (-6%) disappoint. Further down, Ford (+31.8%), Tesla (+110.6%), Volvo (+75.9%) and MG (+142.3%) stand out. Chery lands in the charts with 15 units of its Omoda 5.
Over in the models ranking, the Tesla Model Y (+96.4%) ends the month in first place, a spot it has unlocked 5 times so far (add November, December 2022 and February and March 2023). The Dacia Sandero (-6.2%) drops one rank on last month to #2, followed by the Renault Clio (+53.5%) in outstanding shape. The VW T-Roc (+14.4%) and Peugeot 208 (-21.3%) both slide one spot on May to #4 and #5 respectively just as the Opel Corsa (-6.9%) stays at #6. The Renault Captur (-2%) slices its May ranking in two to #7 despite a negative year-on-year evolution. The VW Tiguan (+40.2%) compensates a weak year ago score and ranks 8th above the VW Golf (-3.3%) down to a paltry 9th place. The Ford Puma (+81.5%) rounds out the Top 10.
