Brazil May 2023: Market back in negative (-4.9%), VW Polo up to #2, GWM lands
The VW Polo ranks #2 in Brazil in May.
166,361 new light vehicles found a Brazilian buyer in May, sending the market back into negative territory at -4.9% year-on-year. The year-to-date volume is now up 10% to 754,851. Fiat (-11.6%) falls faster than the market but easily stays atop the brands charts with 20.7% share compared to 9.8% at home in Italy. Volkswagen (+12.7%) overtakes Chevrolet (+3.4%) to land in the 2nd place overall with 16.55 share vs. 14.4% so far this year. Toyota (-5.3%) stays in 4th place above Jeep (-7.9%) swapping positions with Hyundai (-43.3%). Honda (+58.1%) impresses at #8 as do Ram (+225.1%), Porsche (+99.2%), Land Rover (+51.7%), Ford (+48.7%) and Volvo (+30.2%) further down. Chinese fare GWM makes its first appearance in the Brazilian Top 20, landing directly at #16.
Over in the models lane, the Fiat Strada (-15.7%) remains in the top spot while the VW Polo (+1852.9%) climbs to #2, displacing the Chevrolet Onix (-0.5%). The VW T-Cross (-6.2%) is down year-on-year but up 7 spots on April to #4. All remaining Top 10 members are down bar the Fiat Argo (+37.9%) at #10. The Hyundai Creta (-17.8%), Chevrolet Tracker (-17.2%), Jeep Compass (-6.1%) and Fiat Toro (-5.7%) all lose share just as the Chevrolet Onix Plus (-0.4%) is stable. The Honda HR-V (+21700%) takes advantage of a new generation to rank #11 vs. #21 so far this year. Notice also the arrival of the GWM Haval H6 inside the Top 50 at #44.
