Switzerland February 2023: Skoda Karoq repeats at #1, sales up 3.6%
The Skoda Karoq is the most popular car in Switzerland for the 2nd month running.
The Swiss new car market gains a shy 3.6% year-on-year in February to 17,198 units, leading to a year-to-date tally up 3.5% to 33,635. 4×4 sales beat the market at +5.9% to 8,561 and 49.8% share vs. 48.7% in February 2022. Year-to-date registrations are up 4.8% to 16,778 and 49.9% vs. 49.2% over the first two months of 2022. Petrol is up 4.3% to 6,642 and 38.6% share vs. 38.3% but down -0.8% YTD to 12,546 and 37.3% share vs. 38.9%. Diesel freefalls -24.2% to 1,610 and 9.4% vs. 12.8% a year ago and drops -22% YTD to 3.238 and 9.6% share vs. 12.8%. MHEV+HEV soar 18.3% to 4.911 and 28.6% share vs. 25% last year and gain 18.8% YTD to 9,578 and 28.5% share vs. 24.8% in 2022. PHEV fall -5.2% to 1,432 units and 8.3% share vs. 9.1% and are down -7.3% YTD to to 2,819 and 8.4% share vs. 9.4%. Finally BEV edge up 6.4% to 2,598 for the month and 15.1% share vs. 14.7% and gain 19.1% YTD to 5,438 and 16.2% share vs. 14.1%.
In the brands ranking, Volkswagen (+8.8%) remains the favourite and improves to 10.9% share ahead of a surging Audi (+22.2%) at 8.9% of the market and Skoda (+3.9%) at 8.8% making the podium 100% VW Group as it was also the case in January and over the Full Year 2022. Mercedes (+0.2%) overtakes BMW (-2.6%) while Toyota (-3.2%) remains at #6. The rest of the Top 10 all beat the market with at least double-digit gains. Dacia (+129.5%) fares best ahead of Ford (+50.9%), Volvo (+22.3%) and Seat (+14.2%). Below, notice Cupra (+227.4%), Jeep (+105.8%), Nissan (+98.5%) and Land Rover (+63.6%) all in great shape.
Over in the models aisle, the Skoda Karoq (+195.6%) brilliantly repeats at #1 with 2.3% share. As a reminder it ranked #13 over the Full Year 2022. The Karoq distances the Volvo XC40 (+101.1%) up 14 spots on January to #2 and now #5 year-to-date vs. #39 over FY2022. The Mercedes GLC (+74.5%) also shines at #3 both for the month and YTD vs. #17 over FY2022. This month the Swiss market confirms its extreme volatility. Below, the VW Golf (+20.6%), up 20 ranks on last month, and the Audi Q3 (+56.4%) also sports impressive year-on-year evolutions. Four of the five models remaining in the Top 10 also outrace the market: the Seat Ateca (+122.1%) is the most dynamic ahead of the Dacia Duster (+86.7%), BMW X3 (+52.4%) and Audi A3 (+13.7%).
