14,646 new cars hit Norwegian roads in September, that’s another harsh -18.6% year-on-year drop. This negative streak is unlike other European markets that seemed to have stopped the rot. The year-to-date volume is now down -20.3% to 102,761. BEV sales follow the market with a -18.4% fall to 11,384 units, resulting in a 77.7% market share vs. 77.5% in September 2021 which was an all-time record at the time. Year-to-date, BEV tilts into negative at -0.8% to 79,931 units but improves its share from 62.5% a year ago to 77.8% over the first 9 months of 2021. PHEV continues to sink as a propulsion at -33.5% to 1,669 sales and -63.9% year-to-date at 10.321. In contrast HEV is up 39.5% to 812 for the month but down -29.5% to 5,673 so far this year. This means electrified cars (BEV+PHEV) hold 89.1% of the Norwegian market this month. Petrol sales own just 2.2% of the market with 327 sales and diesel is at 3.1% with 454 sales. Note also that four-wheel drive vehicles holds a 70.8% share vs. 59.1% in September 2021 and 64.8% YTD vs. 52% a year ago.
Brand-wise, as is expected in end of quarters, Tesla (-36.6%) is back to the top spot with a mammoth 25% share but it doubles the market’s year-on-year fall. The American brand reclaims the YTD top spot as a result, toppling Volkswagen (+9.7%) which defies the market slump. Toyota (+14.6%) and Volvo (+37.5%) also post positive results while Skoda (-14.5%) resists slightly better than the market and rounds out the Top 5. Mercedes (+49.5%), BMW (+10.3%) and Kia (+2.6%) manage positive scores in the remainder of the Top 10 whereas Audi (-45%) and Hyundai (-35.3%) both implode. Further down, Polestar (+332.5%) impresses. In the Chinese aisle, MG (+82.4%) stays at #12, Hongqi stays at #19, BYD (+153.8%) is down three spots on August to #20 and NIO (+900%) down one to #23. Voyah only manages one lonely sale for its second month in market.
Over in the models ranking, the Tesla Model Y (-14.1%) is boosted by quarterly shipments to 20.9% share. It distances last month’s leader the VW ID.4 (+39.5%) going from 12% share in August to 6.3% in September but very dynamic year-on-year. The Skoda Enyaq (-19.2%) is also down one spot on last month to #3 ahead of the Tesla Model 3 (-72.9%) staying at #4 but freefalling year-on-year. The Toyota RAV4 (-23.1%) is also in difficulty at #5. The new Volvo C40 is up 90 ranks on August to smash its ranking record at #6 (previous best #15 last February), while the Polestar 2 (+332.5%) is up 18 spots to #7 and the Audi Q4 e-tron (-8.7%) up 8 to #8. The BMW iX and Hyundai Kona rounds out the Top 10. Other notable year-on-year gainers include the Toyota Yaris (+339.5%), Mercedes EQC (+65.8%) and Volvo XC40 (+23.8%).
