South Africa August 2022: Toyota Hilux back on top in market up 14.2%
The Toyota Hilux is the best-selling vehicle in South Africa in August.
The South African new vehicle market continues on its impressive run in August with 47,420 registrations, up 14.2% year-on-year. The year-to-date tally now stands at 344,224 units, up 13.8% over the same period in 2021. Among these, Passenger Cars amount to 31,269 for the month (+14.6%) and 238,844 year-to-date (+23.1%). Exports shoot up 47% to 28,662 for the month and 5.8% YTD to 222,638. The Top 7 manufacturers remain unchanged on last month, with Toyota (23.5% share) the runaway leader and returning to its pre-flood level, followed by the Volkswagen Group (14.1%) and Suzuki (8.8%). Then we have Hyundai (6.6%), Nissan (5.6%), Renault (5%) and Ford (4.9%). Isuzu overtakes Kia to rank #8 while Haval is up one spot on July to re-enter the Top 10 at #10.
Model-wise, the Toyota Hilux rallies back 9 spots on last month to reclaim the top spot it held over the Full Year 2021 as stocks jump back to pre-flood levels. The VW Polo Vivo is up one rank on July to #2, distancing last month’s leader the Toyota Urban Cruiser imported from India. The Ford Ranger is down two spots to #4 ahead of the Isuzu D-Max (-1), Nissan NP 200 (+1) and Suzuki Swift (-2). The VW Polo stays at #8 while both the Toyota Corolla Cross and Hiace rise from outside the July Top 10 directly inside the Top 10. The Toyota Fortuner (#20) is also back in the Top 50 while the Haval H6 is up 17 ranks to #27.
