Germany June 2022: Market decline accelerates to -18.1%

The Alfa Romeo Tonale has landed in the German sales charts.

The German new car market sinks -18.1% year-on-year in June to 224,558 registrations, bringing the year-to-date tally down -11% to 1,237,975. Volkswagen (-24%) fall faster than its home market but still sells well more than double any other carmaker at 19.4% share vs. 18.1% so far this year. BMW (-9.8%) overtakes Mercedes (+9.5%) to #2 despite the fact the latter is the only year-on-year gainer in the Top 10. Audi (-13.1%) fares worse but still beats the market. Opel (-17.7%) closes out the Top 5 as it does year-to-date. Toyota (-8.2%) and Ford (-10.3%) also outpace the market in the remainder of the Top 10 unlike Seat (-44.8%), Hyundai (-25.1%) and Skoda (-19.5%). Further down, Cupra (+88.1%), Polestar (+58.6%), Dacia (+40.3%) and Alfa Romeo (+18.7%) are the only double-digit gainers in the Top 35.

Model-wise, the VW Golf (-35.3%) continues to freefall but keeps the lead with 3.5% share, in line with its H1 level. The VW T-Roc (+4.6%) goes against the market with a year-on-year improvement and lifts to 2nd place year-to-date as a result, displacing the VW Tiguan (-35%) down to #4 this month. The Opel Corsa (+10.3%) rounds out the podium and displays the best year-on-year performance in the Top 12. The Fiat 500 lineup (+5.5%) stays at a fantastic 5th place, a ranking it now also holds year-to-date. Very harsh drop for the VW Passat (-35.7%) in 6th place, followed by the BMW 3 Series (-22.8%), VW T-Cross (-2.8%), Audi A3 (-8.2%) and the Mini lineup (-22.9%). The Cupra Formentor (+45.1%) continues to evolve at a much higher level than a year ago, ranking #13 overall for the month. In June we welcome no less than 6 new nameplates in the German charts: the Toyota bZ4X (#187), Alfa Romeo Tonale (#193), Mazda CX-60 (#248), Nissan Ariya (#279), Subaru Solterra (#280) and Ferrari 296 GTB (#289).
