Romania May 2022: Hyundai (+111.6%), Toyota (+81.2%) stand out in market up 24%

Hyundai sales more than double year-on-year while the Tucson is up 69.9%.

10,198 new cars found a buyer in Romania in May, that’s a 24% year-on-year increase and marks a 5th consecutive month of double-digit gains. Romania continues to evolve at the opposite of most other European markets. The year-to-date tally is now up 32.9% to 47,645. The Top 3 brands all frankly outrace the already very dynamic market: Dacia is up 58.3% to 29.3% share vs. 26.5% YTD. Toyota is up 81.2% to 9.4% share vs. 7.5% YTD as it remains in 2nd place vs. #4 so far this year. Finally Ford (+46.1%) is up one spot on last month to #3 and holds 8.5% of the market vs. 7.8% YTD. Skoda (-19.8%) is in trouble like in most other European markets while Hyundai (+111.6%) more than doubles its sales year-on-year to lodge the largest gain in the Top 15. Kia (+41.3%) is the only additional brand to beat the market in the remainder of the Top 10 while Volkswagen (+11.9%) and Mercedes (+3.5%) post smaller growths and Renault (-25.9%) and Peugeot (-2.4%) are both in negative. Below, DS (+1166.7%), Tesla (+600%), Cupra (+290%), Mitsubishi (+228.6%) and Ssangyong (+168.8%) post surreal year-on-year lifts.

Model-wise, the Dacia Logan (+53.7%) more than doubles the market growth to firmly tighten its grip on the charts with 12.3% share, its highest since last October and to be compared with 9.4% YTD. The Dacia Duster (-24.9%) is in a rut but remains in 2nd place. In fact the Top 5 returns to its YTD order with the Dacia Sandero (+20.1%), the new Dacia Spring and the Ford Puma (+75.8%) in tow. The Toyota Corolla (+69.1%) and Hyundai Tucson (+69.9%) also score fantastic upticks just below as the Dacia Jogger is up one spot on last month to a new record #8. The Renault Megane (+82.7%) and Toyota C-HR (+55%) also shine in the remainder of the Top 10. It’s a swan song for the Dacia Lodgy (+947.1%) back up 58 spots to #11.
