Ireland May 2022: Dacia Duster teases Toyota Corolla for top spot in market back in negative (-10.4%)

Dacia Duster sales are up a whopping 804.3% year-on-year in May.

After two consecutive months of growth, the Irish new car market falls back in negative in May at -10.4% year-on-year to 5,300 registrations. However the year-to-date tally remains in positive at +2.8% to 63,042 units. In the brands ranking, Volkswagen (+2.6%) swims upstream and snaps its first monthly win since last October. It distances Toyota (-7.3%) and Hyundai (+3.4%) both outperforming the market. Skoda (-28.1%) is in trouble year-on-year but gains one spot on April to #4 while BMW (+20.2%) shines and is up four ranks to #5. Below Kia (-25.8%) struggling unlike in most European markets, Dacia (+85.2%) and Nissan (+93.3%) post the largest upticks in the Top 10. Mercedes (+45.2%) also manages fantastic lift at #10.

Model-wise, the Toyota Corolla (-3.2%) is the overall best-seller for the first time since last November but remains #2 year-to-date below the Hyundai Tucson (+25.8%) down to #3 this month. The Dacia Duster (+804.3%) is up 9-fold year-on-year and 28 spots on April to land at an extravagant 2nd place with 3.9% share vs. 1.3% year-to-date. The VW Polo (+255.8%) is also in outstanding shape at #4 as is  the Nissan Qashqai (+468%) at #6. The VW Golf (+76.6%) and VW ID.3 (+49.4%) also stand out, the latter up 28 ranks on last month to #9. The VW ID.4 (-0.9%) rounds out the Top 10 vs. #2 in April. The Toyota Yaris Cross (#18) remains the best-selling recent launch despite freefalling 14 spots on April to #18, it distances the Dacia Jogger (#26) up 18 ranks and the BMW iX3 (#41) up 54.
