India April 2022: Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and Tata Nexon on podium, sales up 2.3%

The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga is up to a best-ever 2nd place in India in April.

Going against the negative worldwide trend, new car wholesales in India grow 2.3% year-on-year in April  to 293,081, marking the 2nd consecutive YoY uptick. The year-to-date tally now dips just -0.6% year-on-year to 1,211,980 units. As it has been the case for a few months now, both Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai (-10.2% each) are losing share year-on-year to 41.6% and 15% respectively. In contrast, the following four brands post very dynamic double-digit gains: Tata is up 65.7%, Toyota up 56.8%, Mahindra up 21.9% and Kia up 18%. The most impressive lifts in the Top 10 however go to Skoda (+436.1%) thanks to the new Slavia and Kushaq, and Volkswagen (+131.4%) thanks to the new Taigun, while Renault (-12.1%) and Honda (-13.2%) are bogged down. Further down, only Jeep (+4.7%) is in positive.

In the models aisle, the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R (-4.8%) easily cements its year-to-date lead where it now stands almost 16,000 units above the #2, the Maruti Suzuki DZire (-24%) down to a paltry #8 for the month. The hero of April is the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga (+72.2%) helped by its facelift up 12 spots on March to land at a record 2nd place (also hit in September 2021) with an all-time high 14,889 sales. The Tata Nexon (+94.2%) breaks into the Indian podium for the very first time at #3, distancing the Hyundai Creta (+1.5%) and Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza (+4.8%) both in positive. The Maruti Suzuki Eeco (-2.7%) is up four spots on last month to #6 while the Maruti Suzuki Baleno (-33.2%) and Alto (-39.6%) take a hard hit. Meanwhile, the new Tata Punch remains in the Top 10 at #10.
