Norway March 2022: Tesla holds 30.8% share in market up 6%, BEV up to record 85.6% share

The Tesla Model Y alone accounts for 20.4% share in Norway in March.

The Norwegian new car market is up 6% year-on-year in March to 16,328 but down -10.9% year-to-date to 32,342. This month BEVs (+62.1%) reach a new market share record at 85.6% thanks to 13,983 sales, eclipsing its previous record of 83.7% share established last January. Year-to-date BEV deliveries are up 39.9% to 26,803 or 82.9% share. In contrast, PHEVs sink -78.4% in March to 947 and 5.8% share and -78% YTD to 2,338 and 7.2% share. HEVs are down -49.1% to 440 in March and -54.1% YTD to 1,182. As a whole, electrified vehicles hold a record 94.1% market share in Norway in March vs. 90.6% a year ago.

As the end-of-quarter is here, Tesla sales account for a whopping 30.8% of the market this month, up 128% year-on-year and allowing the brand to jump from #28 to #1 year-to-date. Volkswagen (+14.1%) is up 8 spots on February to #2, both carmakers dislodging Audi (+106%) from the top spot it held last month. Hyundai (+127.6%) is also down two ranks to #4 but shines year-on-year. Polestar (+38.6%) and Kia (+14.2%) are the only additional gainers in the Top 10 just as Toyota (-70.2%), Volvo (-43.9%), Mercedes (-16.5%) and BMW (-15%) struggle. As for the Chinese newcomers, Hongqi is down two spots on last month to #16, BYD stays at #22, NIO is down 3 ranks to #24, Xpeng (-38.6%) down 8 to #26 and DFSK reappears at #35.

Model-wise, it’s a Tesla festival due to the end-of-quarter when sales of the American brand are usually concentrated. The Model Y holds a record 20.4% of the market while the Model 3 (-21.8%) is at 10.4%. The two models now also rank #1 and #2 respectively year-to-date. The VW ID.4 (+29.8%) is the best of the rest at 6.8% share, distancing the new Audi Q4, Hyundai Ioniq 5 and BMW iX. The Polestar 2 (+38.6%) also gains ground in the remainder of the Top 10 whereas the Volvo XC40 (-51.2%), Audi e-Tron (-16.5%) and Nissan Leaf (-48.7%) markedly underperform. Among other newcomers the Ford Mustang Mach-E is down 5 spots on February to #11, the Hongqi E-HS9 is down five to #17, the Volvo C40 is down 3 to #18 and the BMW i4 is up 94 ranks to #24.
