Mexico September 2021: Kia breaks share record again at 9.3%, Rio up to #2

The Kia Rio is up to #2 overall in Mexico this month.

The Mexican new light vehicle market edges down -1.1% year-on-year in September to 76.930 registrations, leading to a year-to-date volume up 14.1% to 757.846. Nissan (-13.2%) falls significantly faster than the market but easily hold onto the top spot with 19.3% share vs. 20.7% so far this year. Volkswagen (-1.2%) is up two spots on August to #2 and 10.6% share, overtaking Toyota (+55.6%) and Kia (+4.6%) both performing solidly. The Korean manufacturer breaks its all-time share record for the second month running at 9.3%. Chevrolet (-32%) remains in microchip hell and is stuck in 5th place vs. #2 year-to-date. Ram (+57.2%) and Suzuki (+22%) also return very satisfying scores in the remainder of the Top 10. Further down, JAC (+134.4%), Mitsubishi (+122.2%), Cadillac (+101.8%), Jeep (+75.9%), Seat (+39.2%), Mercedes (+33.5%) and BMW (+14.8%) all impress. Newcomer MG is down five ranks on last month to #18.

Over in the models ranking, the Nissan Versa easily remains the most popular, selling almost double any other nameplate in the country at a strong 8% share for the month. The Kia Rio (+12.2%) advances two spots on August to break its ranking record at #2, displacing the Chevrolet Aveo (+105.7%) which was #2 last month. The VW Vento (+41.6%) is also up two ranks to #4 while a Nissan Pickup (-33.5%) in difficulty rounds out the Top 5. Four of the five next models post stellar gains: the Toyota Hilux is up 151.3%, the Nissan Kicks up 27.5%, the Nissan Sentra up 15.7% and the Kia Forte up 15.1%. The Chevrolet Captiva tops recent launches at #25, distancing the Chevrolet Tornado Van aka Wuling Hongguang V at #31 and the MG 5 at #38.
