Taiwan July 2021: Toyota Corolla Cross leads, VW Tiguan up, market down -13.4%

VW Tiguan sales are up 123.1% in a market down -13.4%.

With the country under Level 3 covid restrictions for most of the month, new car sales in Taiwan drop -13.4% year-on-year to 38.064, leading to a year-to-date tally up 2.4% to 259.873. Brand leader Toyota (-21.5%) drops faster than the market but posts a solid 27.1% share vs. 27.3% so far this year. Honda (-29.8%) fares significantly worse in but rallies back up 6 spots on June to land in 2nd place ahead of Ford (-19%) up two spots to #3. Lexus (-13.5%) matches the market at #4 while Mercedes (+8.8%) continues to defy gravity with the only year-on-year gain in the Top 5. Volkswagen (+22.4%), Mazda (+18%) and BMW (+5.3%) also progress in the remainder of the Top 10.

Model-wise, the Toyota Corolla Cross continues to dominate, hitting 8.6% share for the month and distancing the Toyota RAV4 (-40.2%) in freefall year-on-year. The CMC Veryca (-18.4%) is down one spot on June to #3 ahead of the Toyota Corolla Altis (-60.9%) suffering from internal competition by the Corolla Cross. The Honda CR-V (-33.8%) is up four spots to round out the Top 5, distancing the Ford Kuga (-8.1%) up 11 to #6. The VW Tiguan (+123.1%) lodges the largest year-on-year gain in the Top 10 and is up 7 ranks on last month to #7. Below, notice the Nissan Sentra (+150.4%), Honda Fit (+72%) and Mazda3 (+69%) all scoring sizeable upticks.
