Mexico June 2021: VW Taos breaks into Top 10 in market up 38.6%
The VW Taos lodges its first Top 10 finish in Mexico.
New light vehicle sales in Mexico soar 38.6% year-on-year in June to 87.088 units, leading to a year-to-date tally up 18.1% to 515.400. However the market remains well below pre-pandemic levels of June 2019 at -18.2% vs. 106.411 units for the month and -19.3% vs. 638.675 over H1. The Top 5 brands remain unchanged on May and YTD and four of them outpace the market: Nissan (+49.3%) stands at a round 20% share vs. 21.1% so far this year, Volkswagen (+57%) holds 9.8% of the market vs. 10.1% YTD, Toyota (+40.5%) is at 8.8% share vs. 8.4% and Kia (+54.8%) at 8.1% vs. 7.9% YTD. Chevrolet (+9.2%) is the only Top 5 brand trailing the market, and by a significant margin albeit remaining in positive. Hyundai (+59.8%) scores the biggest year-on-year lift in the Top 12 and advances to #6 overall. The rest of the Top 10 underperforms with Mazda (-19.6%) imploding and Ford (+25.8%), Ram (+18.7%) and Honda (+8.7%) all shy. Further down, Fiat (+268.8%), Cadillac (+214.3%), JAC (+183.9%), Land Rover (+121.6%), Dodge (+118.6%), Buick (+106.4%), Volvo (+102.9%), Seat (+89.5%), Infiniti (+86.1%) and Mitsubishi (+76.5%) all post stellar gains.
Model-wise, the Nissan Versa (+37.4%) almost matches the market to hold onto the top spot ahead of the Nissan Pickup (+52.5%). The Kia Rio (+72%) surges ahead to repeat at a record third place and breaks its Mexican share record at 3.9%. The Chevrolet Aveo (+80.5%) also impresses at #4, distancing the Nissan March (+43.7%) up one spot on May to #5. The Chevrolet Beat (-41.1%) is in dire straits and skids down to #6 above the VW Vento (+33.3%) and Mazda3 (+3.8%) both relatively timid. Outstanding performance by the new VW Taos breaking into the Mexican Top 10 for the first time at #10. It is the best-selling recent launch in the country ahead of the Chevrolet Tracker (#20), Chevrolet Captiva (#29) and Suzuki Jimny (#61). This month we welcome the BAIC Alsvin, a rebadged Changan Alsvin, at #201 and the Ford Maverick at #251.
